For me, I believe we need a proper experienced DOF in place, a DOF who does what a DOF football is meant to do. The owners need to go down this route, it needs to be thorough and then put their faith in that person to oversee all things football and be their go to.

These owners seem to want to make a right go of it and they need to have someone with the expertise, experience and understanding of running a football club.
The new guy obviously needs to be in tune with how the club needs to go, as well as be aware of our history when it comes to playing football. They need to be involved in recruitment, if that is being involved or overseeing the stages then it needs to be the case otherwise he would only be a DOF in title alone. People can't be saying we are league leaders in things especially when we are not seeing the results(performances) on the pitch.

It means they feel they have data systems and personnel which give us the edge over others, Galbraith would be a good example as he’s up there with the best players in the league at the moment plucked under the noses of the rest.

Finances also dictate a lot which means we’ve had to look abroad, this usually takes a season or at least two thirds to allow them time to settle in. Like the poster above says, it’s a long term project and the owners must be happy with the players they are unearthing at the moment.

Brighton are also league leaders in that regard but they don’t win the premier league.

So what does a DoF do?
Until Leon was appointed Sporting Director under Trevor Birch we as a club hadnt had an official DoF .
In my time supporting the Swans Ive seen us climb from relection to the top tier fall back down the leagues,endure a high court winding up, win some minor cups get to okay off finals, be one game from dropping out of the league then rising to seven seasons in the PL winning a major trophy and all without a DoF or personnel at the running the club with any football experience apart from being fans and maybe some local leage playing experience.
It is amazing how it is said there is no one at the club with football experience yet our CEO has been in employed in football all his working life and had 3 years experience as a football club CEO before he joined us ....more than a certian previous CEO who oversaw our rise to the PL and is now overseeing Newport County falling out of the league.
Maybe we just need to let the manager/head coach select players like they did in the good old days

Back in the day the recruitment was generally done by the manager who basically oversaw all footballing aspects of the club. That changed under Jenkins (who possibly got too big for his boots who started to oversee all of the transfers). We also started paying agents fortunes to act as sort of recruitment consultants during this time.

Since the Americans came in we have had chairmen in Winter and Birch who were genuine football men and played the game.

Now we have Gorringe, and the club emphasised in all the press releases his financial background in the game. So I'd expect him to be overseeing deals with food suppliers, ticketing pricing, club shop retail, negotiating the stadium rent with the council etc. I'm just going off what the club told us about him, but to me, he shouldn't necessarily be the man to for example make decisions on recruitment or make decisions on managerial appointments. Now I know we're big into data side of things now but I think the thought is that it would be great to have an experienced football man with contacts to supplement the data side of things.

Its not going to happen anytime soon but an Osian Roberts type.

Yeah but their transfer prowess will keep them competitive in the league for years. Brilliant

Brighton are the current benchmark. Is there a more sustainable Premier League team?

I really think the likes of Widdell and Inoussa need ten games straight to completely get up to match speed.

As for Stamenic he had a brilliant first game, aggressive and forward thinking but he then dropped off a cliff. It was almost like Sheehan had told him “calm it down and don’t be so positive” and ruined his natural game. I don’t think he’s a CDM and I think Galbraith should go there and Stamenic at no 8. Widdell at ten and Inoussa RW the resurgent Eom LW.

Matos is only a few games in but he’s done a good job in stabilizing the ship and it looks like the players have turned a corner and are playing much more aggressively.

These are young men being asked to uproot and go and live and work in a foreign country, away from friends and family. Anyone who expects them to click straight away is a little bit deluded.
