Anonymity online

What are peoples thoughts on this? Part of me thinks, if we all had an 'online ID' where we had to post with our real identity - where we could be found by the authorities, many problems, such as online racism, would mostly be stamped out immediately. What are the downsides - not being able to say what you really think, whistleblowing...is that something that is worth losing for the greater good?

I don't disagree Smurph, I just think that with the amount of people using these platforms, there are always going to be people posting things that get through the net. If people had to own what they say, just like in real life, then there would be a lot of change to online hatred.

X has been an issue for years, they have no interest in controlling the filth that is allowed to be spread on there.

I'm sure if the punishments for the owners such as Musk and Zuckerberg were more severe they would have more of an interest in moderating their platforms.

At the moment it is a free for all.

I don’t think it’s necessary for people to use their real identity when posting online. That can be as dangerous as unfettered anonymity. But before opening any kind of account someone should have to definitively prove their identity and whichever website it is should hold that information securely and release it to the appropriate authorities in the appropriate circumstances. At the moment there are too may thin skinned fools attempting to dox people for some perceived internet slight. These people often get it wrong and that can lead to real damage too.

I don’t think there is online anonymity, if anybody commits a serious enough offence online, then I think even if they are using a VPN they can be tracked down.

Take for example this board, if they decided to adopt a principle of using real id, then it would completely die off, because I think the majority of posters would not bother for fear of repercussions in what they have said, I have seen the football board can get a bit feisty at times, it would not be like that, if ones real name was associated with the post, hell I most probably would not even post this, if my real identity was used, it just wouldn’t be worth the hassle.

Picture it if real id was used, it would be absolute carnage.

Thing is, with proper ID, just for posting one’s opinions, it could open up a huge kettle of fish.

I guarantee you, if online ID became compulsory on the internet, then the likes of this board, and many others would be a thing of the past, people would be to afraid to speak their mind, for fear of repercussions.

Personally for me, I think this kind of thing works pretty well at the moment, and I do enjoy browsing through posts, I would hate to see members posts somewhat strangulated for fear of reprisals.
