Losing a pet

I would really advise against it. I was there for our Staff/Lab cross at the vets. It was the worst thing I ever did and after the fact wished I'd never been there. It was awful and it's haunted me since, over 4 years and if we ever have another dog I won't be there when it happens.

I understand that it was hard for you, but I believe that you did the right thing, and I regret not doing that.

Plenty of cuddles tonight I am sure and no doubt a rotten nights sleep. This is the biggest favour you can do for her to repay her for the joy she has brought you and the family. Best wishes to you mate.

Evening all. It only seems like yesterday that Daz had posted that they'd finally lost their dog at around 17 years old (I think)

We are having our Lab put down (who is a couple of months shy of 15) on Saturday. Bloody horrible. Sorry for the morbid post but it just seems surreal.

I have a wonderful dog who’s now 9 and is as much a part of our family as any one else.

I’m heartbroken for you.

Someone once said that you can take comfort from the fact that you’ve been so privileged to be able to be with them for all of their life. It may be a small comfort but in time that knowledge will hopefully make you content.

As others have said, be with them until the end. They don’t ask for anything from us compared to all they give us but it’s one small thing you can do for them when they most need it.

I don’t know what happens when we’re all gone but one thing’s for sure - any type of heaven will surely see them waiting for us.

We lost our beloved Dobe Max in 2013 still miss him today, cracking dog he was he collapsed and died here all alone, lad was in hospital and had been for a week or more, Mrs stayed with him at the hospital and it was the Mrs birthday so I stayed down there all day with her and the lad, we came home to have a takeaway got caught up in a tail back on M4 due to an accident on A465, I opened the front door and an horrendous smell hit me and I knew what had happened, to this day I regret not coming back halfway through the day from the Hospital, poor boy had taken a back seat all week virtually on his own, cause we were at Hospital and eldest in Swansea Uni, not had a dog since, Sheba was the Dobe we rescued before we had Max and she sadly dropped dead as well in kitchen whilst Mrs was cooking Tea, heart breaking,

I agree, this was a very tough read and I'm very sad for your loss. Our cat was 21 when we saw her off and was I broken up? Oh, my word! When you live with a pet for that long (and I'm not sure it makes any difference what type of creature it is), you simply become attached and so when it's time to say goodbye, it's a crushing loss. Time helps in due course., but it never completely leaves you.

My sympathy is with you Wayne. It's a truly awful thing for anyone to go through when they've been such a huge part of your life for so long

When our cat died 9 years ago, my Mrs was in hospital (which is another story altogether) and she was very upset at having to be there and I just didn't know how the tell her and risk upsetting her even more so I couldn't for about 3 days. I found her dead on the bathroom floor one morning and had to bury her in the garden and planted a white rose on the spot. It was so hard doing all that by myself but at least my wife was spared the additional trauma. We got another cat a few months later and she's still with me but at least I know my wife won't have to deal with her demise when it comes.

As my wife always reminds me, because I’m a bit of a sentimental depressive when thinking about the past…

Really sorry to read this and it will resonate with everyone. Dogs are part of their lives but we are their whole life. When they are with us they bring us so much joy and companionship and the house feels full when they are here.
We lost our Lab a couple of years ago when the vet said it was the best thing and our collie went the same way a in July but the vet came to the house. Heartbreaking but the dogs were with their loved ones and calm. I empathise with Steve's comments and it is down to personal choice.
We said we would never get another Lab after the heartbreak and trauma of losing him.
We now have an 8 month old Lab who does everything you might see in Lab memes. We always say "Charlie is watching you" when the puppy is misbehaving. Three guesses for who Charlie is.

Great dogs. As I say we were explaining to the kids about her shenanigans in Leavesden Country Park (she spent most of her first 5 years with us in Watford and then the final 9 here in Hitchin). An absolute machine but sad to see her shutting down
