Civil Service Progression

It is true because I have seen it many many times.
Can't speak to your experiences and obviously different institutions work differently.

I will say from my experience both being the interviewee and interviewer at local government level that the process has always been fair (as far as I can tell from the interviewee side of the process).

The whole system is inherently flawed anyway, at least when promoting from within. You can have 2 people in your team going for a job, one who is excellent at their job but poor in interviews and the other is the polar opposite. If a manager in that circumstance does everything in their power to appoint the person who is better at the job, who could blame them? Unfortunately the rules don't allow that.

I will say that in my experience, it's the poorest candidates who tend to be the loudest in complaining the system is rigged.

Thank you for the insight. Its these kind of things that I am trying appraise. Im wondering if I am wasting my time. I know age a protected characteristic but is there unconcious bias? Are they going to want to promote a fogey when they can promote someone who can use the training for 40 years rather than 10. Everyone in my team who got progression was early 20s. There were 4 of us in the senior bracket and not one of us got in. We probably have over 120 years experience between us. Im not suggesting that this is what happened. I am very impressed with the young team members. They are smart and it is a very competitive process, The job market is tough in Swansea. Maybe I am no longer motivated enough.

Yeah same reading this thread. I’ve never worked in the public sector mind.

I’ve had 5 or 6 promotions with the company I’m with and never had a formal interview for any of them. That may not be the best process either 🤣 The thought of having one as described here makes my teeth itch.
 
Sounds absolutely horrific to me chaps. There’s no way I’d put myself through that process if I was in that sector. Doesn’t sound like cricket at all.
It’s a ball ache at times but you gotta persevere. The civil service has been good to me. It found me a niche that I didn’t know I had and I got a rewarding career out of it.

That’s the problem with me, I wouldn’t be able to persevere, I’d end up speaking out of turn to people that I shouldn’t. It’s sort of how I got a few promotions in my job in the early days, better to have the big mouth onside than offside.

Same here and I've always promoted people in to my team that I wanted.

I'd rather bath my Nan (if she were still alive) than go through this "recruitment" process.

I was a Site Engineer then Section Engineer and got work based on my last job. I didnt interview for 20 years.

Did you ever go into project management? A lot of engineers with us take that exact route, and the company is brilliant from promoting within. They don’t always get it right though.
