Luke Williams was assistant to Russell Martin

Alan Sheehan was assistant to Michael Duff

No more promoting those who have been assistants to crap Managers.

The cycle needs to be broken

I completely forgot about Sheehan and Duff connection. And. Of course Williams.

I think one trend we need to get away from is lower league managers.

Im not saying go and get Klopp, but I'm sure Modric being on board and Snoop profile, we should have a better chance and finding someone who sees us as a good prospect. It feels different to past few years that we was less attractive.

The squad on paper is stronger and we are growing off the field so it's an attractive position to take for someone who wants to show what they can do. And not League One Manager.

Someone finally gets it!!!!

That is precisely the point. We have changed personnel but we haven’t ultimately changed.

We’ve been moving the deckchairs on the titanic.

We had to move on last year.

We’ve completely lost our way. Which has led to the derision of the so called “Swansea way” which was never just about passing for the sake of it.

The whole philosophy was about exciting, enterprising football that was *largely* played on the deck.

The “pragmatists” have won and we’re now in worst of all worlds losing games, dropping like a stone and awful to watch.

We should have reflected, completely wiped the slate clean and rebuilt. We instead spend millions with someone at the helm who was part of he mediocrity.

Maddening.

Was the Sheehan appointment wrapped up in the Duff recruitment, or was he already here? I don’t remember.

Sheehan was brought in by Paul Watson

I think the clubs idea in the past has been to employ their own backroom staff who would continue even when a change of Manager happens I.e Sheehan, O’Leary, Margetson are all connected to the club rather than the Manager

We’re restricting ourselves to managers who are prepared to work with an imposed back room team.

Yes you're correct, the Luton connection. Still, I suppose Duff was happy to have him as an assistant. But the trend is clear..should have bitten the bullet in the summer and gone for a left field foreign appointment maybe (remember Potter) none of this mediocre lower league stuff.

Yep was thinking exactly the same thing. Need a clean break and a dumping of the walking football we have witnessed in recent years

Brutus jeans, platform shoes, tank tops and wing collar shirts…throw in a scarf around the wrist and what a look….hell of a trend that.

There is an argument that the trend goes beyond the managerial hires. The connection backfired on him in the end but Montague was brought in by Coleman and had a prior relationship with the head coach at the time. Our Head of Recruitment right now has the job because of a prior relationship to the owner outside of football. Tom Gorringe seems like he had no prior connection and was hired on his own merit via a recruitment process. This is not to say that these people did not deserve their jobs but lead to these questions and makes it hard to tell whether decisions on evidence or based on relationships. It would be refreshing to see us widen our scope somewhat.

With the coaching staff I believe it is the right decision for a club to have some stability and club staff who are not tied to the head coach. Replacing seven or eight and rehiring the same number each time there is a managerial change is very costly but also ensures we are in a constant transition. Maybe we have not made this as clear as it should be because too many of our head coaches have come from connections to previous ones. If somebody unassociated with the club had come in this summer with two or three of their handpicked right hand men, then O'Leary and Margetson remaining in their support roles may not be a bad thing.

I think we should just be totally open to who wants the job, listen to what they have to say and make a decision based on whether they think they can bring us success.

Aside from Duff, all our recent managers have, to some extent or other, been a bit of a pep wannabe. Lack of risk taking, over passing it, looking for the perfect opening, slow, passive football.... I would have said 3 months ago that Sheehan was the opposite of that but this season has suggested otherwise.
