Just asked ChatGPT why Apple are doing this and it responded with the below:

UK law is the main driver

In the UK, the Online Safety Act has kicked in, which basically says:

👉 Platforms need to stop under-18s accessing adult content

That doesn’t just mean dodgy websites — it also includes:

  • 18+ apps
  • in-app purchases
  • certain online services

So Apple has started adding age checks into iOS to stay compliant.

Yes mate, it’s an absolute joke. Everyone uploading personal information, and then they will be asked again by every bloody app under the sun. This is something we need to pay close attention to. What is an over 18s bloody app or website?

As long as you're using Apple Pay on your phone it's fine, it's just an age verification thing, you don't need to do anything with your other apps.

I have no doubt before long you'll need to provide ID when you do log in to other things online.

The online safety act appears to be pretty useless at first glance. I have mixed feelings about it. The concept appeals, the actual application seems crap.

Until the social media platforms start getting held to account nothing will change. I reported a comment last week where someone called a black player a monkey and apparently the comment didn't break their guidelines.
