World Cup 2026 - A General Thread (Includes ‘Hydration’ Break Discussion)

Infantino is doing a cracking job of making people nostalgic for Blatter. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c80x38e04yro

He is lightweight. No two ways about it. I think his dead ball delivery is quite a bit better than his live ball delivery. Technically though when he's on his game he's one of the top players at the club for me. Seems to very much be a confidence player. Did well at the tail end of last season...

World Cup 2026 - A General Thread (Includes ‘Hydration’ Break Discussion)

Can vaguely remember Mexico '86 with that shadow in the centre circle of the Azteca, but Italia '90 was my first WC and I was captivated by it, although I will echo ANH's comments about that probably being mostly nostalgia. They've been kinda hit and miss since. USA '94 was pretty dull, I...

I liked the way he and Inoussa appeared to have set up a "shortarsed substitute" pairing and teamed up on a number of players to hassle them off the ball. Both players have earned themselves more game time. Inoussa especially should be getting some of the game time that Ronald is.

Nothing's really happened to Cullen. He is playing about as well as he always has barring that little spell last season that got people so excited, and the Championship is a helluva lot more competitive than most International games he'd be involved in. If we've got any serious ambitions of...

The hustle of playing in the middle threw him a bit. Couple of times he got caught on the ball because he just wasn't expecting it to be that quick. It's the sort of thing that can only be fixed with game time though. Want to see more of him than we have.

Could be wrong, but I think that might be the first time Widell has started a game in the centre of midfield as opposed to out wide. Agree completely that consistent game time is the key.

    Arsenal.

To a degree. It's a tossup between slightly tedious Arteta football and very tedious Guardiola football. I never thought I'd find myself sympathising with the Scousers but at least Klopp's teams were fun to watch. If nothing else an Arsenal win would be a bit of a change.

Matt Grimes, Captain of Coventry City.

He always had it in him. Even someone as critical of him as I was regularly acknowledged that. I just got tired of waiting either for him to work it out for himself or a manager to force him to. No regrets over his departure.

We've started like we started on Tuesday, but have the goals to show for it. Let's hope we don't finish like Tuesday.

Matt Grimes, Captain of Coventry City.

He played his best football when forced out of his comfort zone hiding between the centre backs. Only Potter and to a lesser extent Duff ever did in the nigh on decade he was here. If Lampard is getting a consistent tune out of him then that's more to his credit than Grimes's.

Much of what we did that was good in the first half involved him. He moved the ball quickly and rarely took more touches than needed. I defend him quite a bit and I'm not claiming that he's the answer, but 300 games in the top two divisions is no fluke. He's a much better player than most give...

A fairly encouraging first 30-35 minutes where we played the game at a decent pace and probably deserved to be level at HT. Went to bits after the break, even more so after the subs. Stamenic offers us nothing that Fulton didn't already and based on tonight is worse at it. Benson was even...

It is a panicky post when the insinuation is that the club wouldn't have known about his contract situation unless someone on Twitter had pointed it out.

Football clubs often don't have the first idea about the contractual status of players they've spent years developing until people who had previously never heard of them point it out thanks to panicky social media posts.

Vitor Matos Named Swansea City Boss as New Era Begins at the Swansea.com Stadium

The overall intent is generally very good. Stuff like the Coventry bus deal and getting Leon and Allen involved, albeit temporarily and probably more for PR purposes than anything else does suggest that they understand the importance of having the support onside. Execution however has been lacking.

O'Dea - Reason For Our Downfall?

Things have gone to shit this season, and I don't think people are too wide of the mark in ascribing a fair proportion of the blame for that to O'Dea and the influence he clearly had considering his team selection and game managment was horrendous, but it's quite bizarre to see people still...

    The ‘Vítor Matos’ Managerial Thread

The length of the deal doesn't matter as much as the value of it. For example, a four year deal for £150k a year costs the same overall as a three year deal on £200k. Could well have been structured that way for tax purposes.
