Do countries have to pay players wages if called up to play? Never really thought about it before.

I don't think so, however if players are injured on international duty I'm quite sure it's the national team's insurance that would pay for any layoff.

Players I believe receive a fee for international matches which I believe is quite nominal, excluding international tournaments where it is up for negotiation, whch occasionally leads to strike action, such as Denmark after the World Cup.
