If it’s a well known fact that females have much smaller brains than males how come girls are coming out on top in A Level results?

Surely the stats must be wrong? 🤷🏼‍♂️

It was results day in our house. Stressful for everyone involved and I don't remember it being like it thirty years ago, neither for me or my parents.

No there wasn’t, there is a lot of pressure on the kids these days, as if it it’s the end of the world, If results don’t work out, so what. You go again.

That’s what we kept saying. I’m not sure it helped much, but we at least felt that we were saying the right thing. Her hard work paid off in the end, there is rarely a substitute for it.

Glad it all worked out, great news. But yeah there’s a lot of bloody pressure on kids these days,.

And as Clarkson lightly touches upon by there, when I was in school, there were many kids in my year who were put in the lower bands, at the time being a 14 year old, you just think ah well they won’t do well. Honestly, they have all done well,

She’s got a great start now. 👍

The media should take a lot of blame for the importance and pressure that is put on passing these types of exams. You never see this sort of fanfare for those who do apprenticeships, which are every bit special as those who do A levels and degrees.

There are 166 Universities in the UK. In 1986 there were 38, roughly 30 polytechnics and around 20 or so HE providers -usually vocational programmes and teaching training. There is absolutely more need for apprenticeships from basic trades to degree and doctorate level apprenticeships. Areas like engineering would be better served by five year apprenticeships which incorporate degrees and real life experiences into learning.

I take one handful of trade apprentices and graduate apprentices a year on earn as you learn contracts which is very fulfilling for all. There's good funding out there for this too.

Absolutely and there should be more. Far better experience than 'sausage factory' degrees with huge classes and low personal contact. Whilst there is no such thing as a truly 'useless degree', we really should look at pivoting a proportion of universities to deliver the educational component around vocational areas. A nursing degree is essentially an apprenticeship without pay!

Our part-time Engineering degree apprenticeships are becoming far more popular now than when I started teaching about 14 years ago. For example, on one level 4 stream intake last year I had over 30 people, whereas in the early 2010s I would sometimes get classes of 3 or 4. It’s definitely the way it’s going (thankfully we’ve been proactive and are a little ahead of the curve).

Our full-time numbers are still much higher but there is a shift happening. My wife is a secondary school teacher and tells me it’s incredible how many students are leaving with good STEM A-levels and don’t want to stay in full-time education.

Mrs Bear teaches locally. She's been concerned about this cohort since they arrived in Lower Sixth two years ago, yet they've almost all emerged with A* and A.

She still thinks they were a poor cohort. 🤷
