Cardiff Council SUV surcharge

Its SUVs they seem to be targeting, yes.
I'd put money on the fact that if you put two similar SUVs similar spec, same footprint, etc, etc, side by side one EV one petrol, I'd put money on the EV weighing more, could be wrong mind, but I reckon batteries weigh significantly more than a tank of fuel.🤷‍♂️
Should be easy enough to check, vehicle weight is show on the reg certificate.

I wonder how long they are talking about, before they intend to implement this new rule.?

IMHO unless it’s a 5 year fair warning, then just get ferked. And that’s without even considering, will the proposals do any good or not.

Did I read 10 years somewhere.🤔

EV’s are much heavier than proper cars, it’s not up for debate. The road tax should be more due to them carving up the roads.

An ICE powertrain system weighs less than the EV equivalent, I am yet to find one that bucks this trend when measured at system level.

Batteries will probably weigh a lot more than a tank of fuel for sure, large SUV due to their weight will have a much larger battery than a normal EV because of their general size and lack of aerodynamic shape.

The reality is that SUV’s are a status symbol, who needs 4WD and seven seats regularly?

Peoples perception that they need 4-500 mile range means that manufacturers build bigger cars with bigger batteries for journeys of usually under 250 miles a week for most people.

I have no doubt that those people with off street parking and a huge SUV will not be affected by this at all and will continue to drive their SUV on the school run parking on the pavement or just blocking the road because they can.

The EV weight argument is a red herring.

“Proper cars” are running out of fuel and shown to be causing harm to people by pollution which costs the country a lot more than a bit of tarmac.

Drive a modern EV once and you wont go back to burning a rare valuable commodity which once burnt can’t be used again and will undoubtedly be needed for far more important tasks than powering a car.

Not arguing your point about petrol, but I'll be happier switching to an EV once the dependence on rare earth magnets has been overcome, battery production becomes cleaner, more recycling methods are developed. I'm aware there's various research efforts underway across the world on these issues as otherwise EV's are not going to be sustainable.

So most batteries are completely recyclable already from the AAA in your remote to my EV battery. A lot of companies are using used EV batteries as Solar storage batteries for commercial and domestic use.

As people start transferring to an electric powered home and vehicle the recycling will be even greater, gas and oil once burnt are gone forever, we will need both in the future i have no doubt which is why its so important we conserve it now.

Most information regarding rare earth minerals is somewhat skewed by the fossil fuel industry misinformation…they want us to keep on burning fossil fuels.

Thanks for the info. I read some seemingly authentic academic articles, but we all know that means nothing with the current version of the internet and I'm definitely not an expert in this field.

So what's your solution for those of us who haven't got off road parking?
I'm in the fortunate position of being able to afford a new car but an EV just isn't practical.

That’s a different argument and not an opinion I disagree with. My post was based on FACT.

I've always held the view that we should be going down the hydrogen route, and I'm yet to be convinced otherwise. There is approx 40-50 years of oil left at current usage rates, not a great deal I'll admit.I'm also of the opinion, that an alternative fuel source will be identified sooner rather than later.
Nickel, cobalt etc are all being mined at a rate of knots, which is causing untold environmental damage.
I'm not surprised that folk who have gone down the EV route are pissed off as they will not doubt be targeted by governments for extra revenue, how else are they going to recoup the loss of revenue by getting rid if ICE car tax.
Anyhow, if an EV suits your lifestyle and you can afford one then crack on, but dont be surprised if the government come after you for a bit more. Just the way I see things.👍
