Covid Reflection Day

Whys that, it wasnt before covid, so why is it now. Unless you are a carer or something similar, folk need to get back to work, it's not healthy, to be stuck at home, especially if you live alone. For others it's an excuse to do FA. Sorry for the rant, but we needed to get back to normal, not this new normal bollox.
Theres a lot of employers who've had enough and getting employees back to work. And for all those say otherwise I've heard it all before. Rant over, it's a pet hate of mine.
You’re assuming people do sweet FA. What do you do?

If your role is judged by outcome and you did the job and hit your targets what’s the issue here?

It just seems like a classic example of working people fighting out amongst themselves to limit rights that will have benefited people because it didn’t benefit THEM.

Why is it a pet hate of yours? Explain your reasoning. Do you employ people?

Civil Engineer mate. You?
I'll tell you some the issues. When work time is staggered, not working the same hours ie 9 to 5.
Not being able to get hold of people when needed, lack of communication, lack of direct contact, need I go on.
No infighting from me, and it would benefit me if I chose to WFH.
Like I said it worked before covid.
No I dont employ people, but if I did, they'd be in the office.
Anyway, I'm up very early in the am, to get into the office, it's our busy time atm.
Dont really want to trash this thread as it's probably not the time or place, catch ew later.👍

I wouldn't pay much attention to that space cadet mind.👍
Yes. from what he says there. I don't really get it. Like obviously when a successful multi billionaire speaks, it seems like I have to listen to it, but I'm not really getting the vibe from that little piece.

Ok, boomer.

Before Covid many companies were expanding work from home anyway for many reasons. I used to work from home 1-2 days a week before Covid. With some careers it makes sense and benefits employer and employee.

This weird feudal idea that employers ‘own’ people and can treat them like cattle took a hit during covid and hopefully some of those gains will stick.

No, I don’t want to spend 3 hours a day commuting to sit in front of a computer when I have one at home and can do the job to the same, if not higher, standard from there. I am contracted to perform certain job duties, I’ll do those and you judge me on the results. you don’t need to supervise my every move and demand I work out of a specific building each day for no real benefit just to satisfy some weird slave-owner power trip fetish you have (and justify your corporate leases)

(It’s a pet hate of mine too, just in reverse!)

Working from home started way before Covid, it's not a new concept in working.
Fair point.

It's been ramped up more since COVID and from my personal experience and knowledge, too many people are taking advantage of it it and taking the piss.

Get people back out and about is my view. People cried that they were put in lockdown and now they don't want to leave their houses to go to work and will cry if their told to get out and go back to work.

I understand it's an open argument with plenty of pros and cons to be discussed. There is no real right or wrong in it for sure.

As it’s such a nuanced debate maybe you shouldn’t have entered it with this comment then:

“This working from home bollocks needs to stop.”

WFH won’t work for everyone or enemy job but I’ve worked remotely off and on for well before Covid. These days on the days I do go into the office I spend most of my day talking to people on other parts of the country and sometimes other parts of the building on Teams. Make it make sense as the gammon are so fond of saying.

There is absolutely a place for working from home in the modern way of life. We are all after a better work life balance and if employers can give commuting time back to the employee then that’s a win win situation for everyone concerned. A happy employee can translate into improved productivity, lower staff turnover, and therefore improved costs.

If employers are concerned about the performance of their teams who work from home, then they cannot be ‘managing’ effectively.

We aim for a two to three day office presence, this is a guideline rather than a rule. However key events are to be supported in person and as dictated by the company. Employees who slack off are quickly weeded out through effective performance management.

FWIW I average 75% office, 25% WFH.

WFH definitely has a place in the modern world. I work in construction and the majority of people can’t work from home, site managers, engineers, brickies etc. but there are roles which can do it on a hybrid system.

There are those that take the piss though, especially on the client / designer side. Some projects are getting harder to get off the ground because of this.

No, I could have elaborated and delivered that better.

A lot of homeworking that has come about since or because of COVID needs to be looked at.
A lot take the piss and many will defend it because it suits. You find the ones who do work from home and understand the cons of it are not ones who take the Micky.

On a personal level, I only done it for a few months on the first lockdown and was eventually glad to get back to work.
No good for me sitting in my house and finding that cut off from work and home situation....not seeing and speaking to people and restricting my movement in the outside world, I would have gone mental and would certainly have effected my home life.

That’s fair enough, it doesn’t work for you and that’s fine. There’s a balance to be struck here and it’s not a black and white issue. Others have already stated views that I completely agree with so I won’t repeat them here. But there is still some very old fashioned thinking around. And those who think you have to be in an office to get things done are just betraying their own lack of ability to adapt and change. Dinsoaur thinking. I also object to people (not you) telling me what is and isn’t good for my mental health. What’s good for someone’s mental health may not be good for someone else’s.

I'd love to be able to work from home, and I can honestly say my mental health would improve 110% immediately 👍😂

Some jobs are best played out at home, someone l know goes to office 2/3 a week and the other days are spent at home and they they end up working longer hrs as well very often.
It’s not me by the way, couldn’t do my job from the house, 🤣
