It wasn’t just the penalty, but Madley’s performance for the 10 or so minutes before that was bizarre to say the least. It was almost as if he was willing Stoke to score. I think he gave the penalty for handball against Routs when he clearly headed it off the line (on to the crossbar if memory serves correctly)
 
I think it was a pen. I don't like it but that was a pen. If you watch the game again you will see that a tackle constitutes a foul. The ref blew up every time Grimes or Fulton took the ball off an opponent, regardless of whether it was a foul or not. Perversely he didn't blow up for obvious fouls, but that's another conversation.

True there was that player of theirs that tried to chop Naughton in half and didn't even get booked for it
