Although Jamie Paterson will rightly take all the plaudits with a great display today (the same as all our players!), I thought Ethan Laird was fantastic. Clearly a passionate young man who is hungry to succeed. A brilliant performance from Ethan, long may he be our (loan) player!

Quality player who will only get better with regular game time, Downes was another stand out today, great player.

downes is a premier league player already for me, superb

Spine of a Premier league team forming slowly. Downes, Ntcham, Piroe. Wouldn't have looked out of place in many of our teams of yester year.

Huge credit to recruitment

Agree with this… Downes won’t be here long if he keeps performing like he is. Unbelievable player.

Downes wasn’t having any of Cardiff’s aggro today and that’s for sure.

The third goal may have been created by Paterson but it was only made possible by Downes's sheer determination to give Moore f*ck all and the persistence of Laird to get to the ball as well as the intelligence to see a great opportunity by doing so

Smith was constantly talking to and waving his arms around at Laird, as if he wasn’t happy with the positions he was taking up. On that showing Smith would be better looking in the mirror rather than trying to stop Laird being one of the most exciting, positive fullbacks we’ve ever had. Unless I’ve read that wrong.

It wasn’t the first time he’d handled their physical approach either. I thought he was superb today. I’d like to see a bit more from Grimes now that Downes can sit. Downes’ arrival should in theory free Grimes up. But both are playing really deep and there’s often a huge gap between those 2 and Piroe.

I agree that Downes was absolutely exceptional and was only denied MotM by Paterson stealing the show, early days yet but we may have finally found a true successor to Leon.

Not convinced by Laird. He appears to have the makings of a top player but when presented with the opportunity to get the ball in to the six yard box his preferred choice is to go to ground. Hopefully he’ll snap out of that and rely more on his ability and less on his enthusiasm for drawing free kicks.

I would happily sign Laird on a permanent basis.

He looks to be loving his time here and is a quality player.

Still young and lots of time to continue to improve.

Won’t be coming here on a permanent basis, United rate him highly and expect him around the first team next season.

I agree. I was just surprised to read that some of our fans don't rate him.

My way of saying I do, was I would sign him.

Like you said though, he is rated by ManU fans.

Still one hell of a step up from us to ManU first team. See Dan James, although I actually think he did okay there.

Perhaps if we get promoted next year we could afford him. We did get Tate from them after all.
