Lampard, Ferdinand, Shearer and Lineker, Jorginho should've seen red.. I don't hear them mention Sterling and his clear dive the other night, excuses and excuses.. anyone else laughing

No, not laughing as I'm english. Not distraught either though, as we've had a cracking Euros and the team have showed that there's no place for the little Englander racism and general twattishness that we've seen across the whole of the UK lately. I didn't' expect us to get anywhere near as far, so although disappointing after coming so close I'm really proud with the effort and how they've handled themselves.

The team have been very good on the pitch and excellent off it to be fair. Didn't take any joy in them losing and feel sorry for the inevitable abuse (plenty of it racist) that Saka, Rashford and Sancho will now inevitably face from England 'fans'.

Unfortunately it's the English media and a sizeable section of their fans (plus the politicians as Monny points out) that makes it impossible for me to want England to win a tournament. It's one of those things that's probably peculiar to Britain and the Union, but is probably impossible to accurately explain how it feels to be Welsh or Scottish in these circumstances to an English person. Like trying to explain how being a parent feels to someone who isn't a parent, it's hard to put into words and you have to experience it for yourself to really get it.

Eder brought the trophy on and nearly gave it to the wrong player then got flagged offside.

Watching Aunty Beeb this morning (finally tuned back in) - "Gareth" has now reverted to "Gareth Southgate". Give it a few days, and he'll be back to "Southgate", same with the pundits. What a wonderful day eh!

What a wonderful morning. At Stratford races yesterday we endured groups singing shyte all day....found a pub full of em last night.....what a fckn result! Laughed like fck at em at the end, couldn't happen to nicer bunch. Arrogant cvnts. Needless to say they knew we were happy they lost

As an aside, I've really enjoyed this competition. It's been a great month of football. Great to see some atmosphere back in football too.

I agree, there's been some wonderful football on view. As an ex local league referee, I'm always interested in how the officials did and how refereeing is evolving. Two things to say about that. First, it was great to see refs allowing a lot more physical contact and generally ignoring players falling over and rolling around, looking for a free kick (apart from Sterling, the cheating git). On the minus side, what oh what is this new instruction about to delay putting up the offside flag? How many times did we see an attack happening and a goal nearly being scored, only for a lino to put his flag up what seemed like half a minute later? Just WHAT is the point? if the guy's offside, he's offside. What possible benefit is there for wasting everyone's time by allowing play to continue, then flagging late?

I think the theory is to let play go on so if a goal is scored, then the flag goes up and it's a natural break in play for VAR to check if it actually was offside or not. If the linesman was wrong, the goal can be given. In reality though, it's a mess.

What happens if a penalty is given in that passage of play and a red card shown? Is it all rescinded because it should have been offside? Back to the drawing board with this one I think.

Few got lairy at the races outside but they backed off and outside the pub after the game but they also fcked off when fronted up. Was funny as fck tbh.

Throughout the competition England have relied on one mechanism to keep possession. Pass to the back 4, up and down the line, out and back to the DMs. The trouble is, the Italians invented that and they know how to counter it. That was why I thought England would lose to Italy. In the first minute the back 4 were pressed and Maguire had to put it out for a corner, and so it went. England couldn't keep possession all game.

Italy deserved to win, although I hate the 'Penalties'. They should shake up Extra Time and make that more likely to give a result.

Agree with you about extra time, but how to do it? They tried with the 'Golden Goal' rule and that just made things worse as teams didn't bother attacking as they were terrified of the opposition scoring on the counter.

They really should look at how stalemates are decided. Penalties really are a lottery.

There was a lot of talk about introducing the MLS-style 1-on-1 penalty shootouts a few years back. It went quiet then. A lot more skill needed and arguably more entertaining...

I would have both teams take a player off at the start of Extra Time. After 10 minutes, if one team has the lead then that's the result. No result then both teams take another player off. Repeat at 20 minutes. The final 3rd of Extra Time they would be playing 8 a side.

What I like about this is it would get a result. What I don't like is that the winners would be so jiggered by the end they would get knocked out next round. It would put an end to the mind numbing regulation 30 minutes of 'playing for penalties'.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of extra times don't break the deadlock. If it's high (whatever that means), I'd say they need to come up with an alternative. Otherwise, they should just leave as is. The golden goal was a terrible idea. Was there a silver goal?

TBH, by the time they get to penalties, it's obvious there's not much between the teams, so penalties is as good a way as any of breaking the deadlock.
