Putting aside the fact that - on live glance at the game - he looked to be the victim of a bad decision yesterday with the first yellow (surely he took the ball?) he was lacking discipline for most of the match - he looked a red card waiting to happen for at least half an hour

He did & got a tad lucky in the handbags incident down in the North-East corner where he brought his head towards the Forest player, who actually helped Downes by ridiculously over reacting by throwing himself to the floor & thankfully the officials remained calm.

That said Downes, as you’d expect, stepped forward well in the first half & helped create space for others. If we had better pace at the back in our CBs Downes as a sweeper would have some attraction.

I agree with that last sentence although the sight of Downes and Grimes playing keep ball on the edge of the area is just a little nauseous

Too often in the game - and this is going off on a slight tangent - we do get people who run into space but then have to check as the players don't see it quick enough so the check is to remain onside and then they receive the ball as they are heading backwards

With a game that we are - allegedly - trying to play then the players have got to become more streetwise in anticipating a run -sometimes it won't happen but when it does the desired space will have been created.

I would also add that streetwise is something Grimes needs to pick up -a couple of free kicks kicked at the opposition player in front of him will earn a few yellow cards and change the dynamic of the game. Forest managed it well in both halves with some well timed Connor Roberts-esque free kicks won.

Agree on the quicker release piece for runners - even though we lack the real pace to exploit it - particularly with our WBs playing so high & to release Ntcham into space. Piroe for me needs to do more in that regard he is too often on his heels & chasing the game, decent finisher mind.

Grimes is just generally too ‘nice’ in all aspects of his game.

What actually happened with the Downes incident in the second half? I'm sat in the south and with the weather I could hardly see what happened. I thought he was a lucky boy though.

The sooner he is played in Grimes position the better. I wouldn't mind seeing grimes further forward because at the moment although like previous posters have said he's just a little too nice. He's a lovely footballer but everything seems to be slowed down or the easy option.

He was probably keen to get off the pitch after watching big contract ‘Grimesy’ playing the position he would be significantly better at and watching the players either side of him hung out to dry.

More to the point, I think he had that reputation at Ipswich of being a walking red card? Not sure, just something I recall vaguely.

Yes that tippy tappy shite between him and Grimes when two goals behind wasn’t going down well at all. Perhaps it’s as well that the next games are away.

Show me a better holding midfielder in this league. I’ll wait. He could step into the premier league tomorrow with no problem at all. A proper Rolls Royce of a player.

There wasn’t anything wrong with the tackle he got booked for, and as for the incident with the cheating prick, 5 yards in front of the Lino, their player should have got a straight red for it. On another day Downes walks for that.

You have to realise if we don't do that tippy tappy stuff our possession stats will go down and we won't be lauded as a team that likes to keep the ball. :)

I think he’s great. I would be building the team around him. I think he could be very effective driving forward too.

Been hanging around with Matt Grimes too much.

You can see that he wants to be aggressive and ambitious on the ball, but gets sucked into the same, ultra cautious style.

We can't go into games with a Smith, Grimes Downes midfield. Allied to the way we've starter overdoing the passing back there and teams are learning that they can pressurise us into making mistakes. We have to move the ball forward more quickly. Break the lines more quickly. The few times we did it yesterday Forest started panicking.

The handbags incident apart (as said, another ref may have sent him off), I thought he was one of a tiny few that did well yesterday. I like players who generally have a "red card" in them - shows they usually have passion and get stuck in.

I'm a Grimes fan, but he irritated me yesterday. Too often he returns to our box to collect the ball, where Downes is literally better placed and able to do so, thereby making himself unavailable to receive the ball in midfield! Agree with more balls played to those making a run too - we need to mix it up more. Too predictable atm.

We were saying the same yesterday, Downes is about the only player we've got who is premier ready. With players of a similar calibre around him, he could be the focal point of any team.

Quality player even if the uneducated can’t see it.

With that comment the cage that holds AC will have been rattled.
