Sad news. I’m old enough to remember him at his best, he was a wonderful player who was so far ahead of the times in the way he played.

He was before my time in terms of seeing him in his prime, but when I was a football obsessed kid, consuming loads of football books and magazines, I distinctly remember reading about Beckenbauer's passing ability with the outside of the boot and I'd practice passing with the outside of my foot all the time like Beckenbauer (even though I'd never really seen him play!) It just looked so cool seeing the pictures and reading the descriptions in these books and magazines. Beautiful passing with the outside of the foot just became a Beckenbauer thing for me.

RIP Herr B. Thanks for helping me with my passing skills.
