To much emphasis is being paid to data in Football in my opinion, at the end of the day its a game of Football.
No way, Max. Your statement is true for Sunday league football, but towards the top of the pyramid it’s a vital part of club set up. Marginal gains are everything and distinct advantages can be gained from addressing shortcomings, and that means the use of data and analytics.

You’re both right to an extent but analytics is an industry and it’s created copy and paste managers, of which we’ve had a few. It’s not just football, it’s in all businesses. Managers have created other managers and hidden behind numbers and stats whilst haemorrhage money and being non-accountable.

Football clubs need talented managers with an understanding of data but if you think you can number crunch your way to being a decent side you are wrong.
 
I don't know what his role is, but if he's watching MOTD this morning, he'll be wondering if it's the same game he sees at Swansea.
There is an enormous gulf between the Premier League and the Championship this season. Just watching two of the lesser sides, Wolves and Bournemouth, the pace of the game, the skill levels, the passing and the finishing were just off the scale compared to the stuff we are served up.

Cut and paste managers are sucking all the humanity and personality out of the game. I find going to the stadium a real ordeal these days watching LW’s version of RM’s copy and paste

Stats and analytics play a role, but when people genuinely believe that nonsense like xG is of any real value to assessing whether a team or player is any good or not it's gone too far. It's basically a reinvention of the kind of thinking that drove Charles Hughes, the man who set British coaching back decades with his theories based on statistical analysis.

Flair players, the kind of players that can get crowds on their feet, are becoming a rare breed. Coached out of existence by managers who want predictability.
