York has serious financial difficulties. They have even lowered their entry requirements to overseas students in the hope they may travel there. The Russell Group has indeed highlighted the urgent risks to the sector's long-term financial health.

In my locality I'd reckon Bristol and Cardiff are ok ish, although the Temple Meads vanity ego project of the last eejit may change things at Bristol if they can't fill it with overseas masters students.. UWE less ok. Wouldn't be surprised by a shared service type operation with two marketing arms for UoB and UWE. as that's what I would be looking at. Newport/Ponty, God knows. Hard to see how they (and UWE come to that) could scrape the barrel any further for people that simply shouldn't be at a 'university'.

Universities would get no sympathy with me if I was a minister until they address their cost bases properly. There are so many non jobs and hierarchical layers and people doing naff all for big wages, I reckon up to a third could be taken out of many, and redundancy should certainly be on the cards if they want to save themselves.

Sounds like those who have taken over Syria may want to chill everything down and rebuild their country, rather than get involved in wars, lets hope so anyway, but you can bet ISIS and the like won't want that.

Redundancy is always more likely to hit academic and technical staff first-but there are masses of support staff, yet still increasing bureaucracy. Bristol has not got much choice in building as large parts of the Clifton campus are crumbling- and let's be frank selling that land for development is going to raise ££££££££. Bristol has less to worry about as more endowment and in World Top 100 rankings at 78 (as in indication Cardiff is in the 200-250 range and Swansea 300-350). UWE (Like Cardiff Met) has a lot of professional courses and integration with local industry. USW is perhaps the most stretched-with three campuses and an enormous portfolio of courses. Importantly UWE is 600-800 world ranking and USW 1000-1200. Some countries will only fund students based on these QS rankings-
