Jerry Yates

I'm not entirely sure what people want from Yates.

Thus far the biggest criticisms of him seem to be that he doesn't do what they expect him to do. He's not dropping deep to create chances. He's not battling to hold the ball up. What he is doing is putting away the chances he does get. That seems to suggest the problem is the number of chances we're creating for him, not Yates himself.

He's not being helped by us having to play Cullen instead of Ginelly. I'd wager that he'd be getting much better service from the flanks and probably more goals if Gino hadn't picked up that knock.

Stop talking sense man!!!

He's scored as many goals this season as Vardy, Whittaker and until yesterday Iheanacho, in a team that was pretty terrible for the first half dozen games. He's only one behind Piroe. He's done OK for me.

Plenty of room for improvement of course, but that stands for the team in general. I'd expect him to score plenty more if given the opportunity.

I've said it many times, Yates is not a lone striker holding the ball up kind of striker and we will never see the best of him if we continue operating in that fashion. When he did well for Blackpool it was by having another striker as a foil to play off who DOES have that kind of game, right now the closest match we have for that is Kukharevych. I would love to see him and Yates get some game time together as a two but it would require a rethink in formation which is a tough ask after picking up 13 of 18 points (and pushing the runaway leaders close).

Cullen is also wasted out wide but the serious injury to Ginnelly has forced our hand there. Like Yates he does his best work in and around the six yard box, however unless Cooper and Congreve can step up big time and impress Duff enough to get some pitch time he is the most willing runner and best option we have for that position.

On Saturday during the game, I was thinking about the role Cullen has been given and was wondering if Key would work in that position and bring in someone else, presumably Ashby, at RB? From what we've seen so far, Key is no slouch, has great energy and loves to get forward and could be even more effective without any defensive responsibilities.

That wasn't on Yates. Wtf was he supposed to do?

I think far better strikers would have struggled with our service tonight

I agree, they are playing completely the wrong game for Yates, he needs either to be playing off a decent striker, or feeding off wingers who can get behind the defence and lay chances on for him. A creative midfield player would also help. Unfortunately we don't have any of them type of players regularly playing. Lumping high balls up to him is a complete and utter waste of time.

We had diddly squat in midfield so all the defence could do was ping balls over the top all night. Obviously that's Jerry Yates's fault.

We've seen this time and time again going back as far as Jason Scotland. Strikers getting blamed for the shit service that they're provided.

I'm not blaming Yates, I'm just saying under the current way we play and with the players on the pitch , he's offering nothing .
