Jerry Yates

I think he’s crap but he didn’t stand a chance tonight with the tactics (in the loosest sense of the word) we used

I'm not blaming Yates, I'm just saying under the current way we play and with the players on the pitch , he's offering nothing .

He's done fine. Would be better served with an actual wide forward on his right as opposed to Cullen tho.

Again this boils down to what people are expecting him to do. He's working his balls off battling for possession and chasing stuff down, but we gave him absolutely nothing to work with in the final third tonight. He's not suddenly going to drop deep and start creating stuff for others as Piroe used to. He's just not that type of player.

If we wanted nothing more than effort and tap-ins we could have saved a few quid and stuck with Cullen. Was he getting quality service at Blackpool? Surely he must have a bit more about him to get 14 with them.

Hes a penalty area goal scorer, create chances and he will score. Aimless long balls upto him with no support is pointless.

He's definitely not the striker for the way Duff sets his team up to play.

I think in the right type of setup he'd be half decent, but in this mish-mash it's never going to work, for him or us.

Another example of the muddled thinking at the football club. "oh here's a bloke who's quite cheap and scored a few in the Championship last season, we'll just sign him". No thought given to his skills set, how it fits in to our side, nothing.

But then you could just as easily say that for several players in this side.

I’m not sure how that all isn’t bleedingly obvious to Duff and his coaching team, but here we are.

I'm sure Duff is aware of it. Taking longer to sink in with our supporters.

That’s true enough. With a bit of luck Duff can move from being aware to setting up the team in a way that plays to our strengths. There’s a lot of work to do on that, as we’re not close to being cohesive.

At least the games come thick and fast now for a bit so they’ve got chances to put things right.

The team has been doing just fine in the last month, but we're not the finished article by a long shot, which Duff has said often enough. For me last night there were three main problems. One of them Duff's fault, two of them he had little control over.

Grimes and Fulton cannot play together. It's either/or. On current form then that's Grimes by a mile. We've paired them multiple times over the last four seasons and it just doesn't work. Both prefer sitting deep and neither of them are ball carriers, so we basically surrender the middle third and end up playing panicky chipped passes all night. Patino has to play if he's fit. If not him then Cooper or someone else.

The two problems he can't much help were the absence of Ginelly and Key. Cullen just isn't a wide player. There must be a natural wide forward in the u21's worth a punt instead because he offers next to nothing from the flank. Key also produces a lot more going forward than Ashby does. Not 100% Ashby's fault because he's barely had a look in and couldn't have been up to speed, but still. Ultimately the midfield problem would still have been a major issue, but at least we'd have had other options.

Yates has scored as many goals this season as some notable names in the division, and he's done it in a side that hasn't exactly been consistent. I can't fault his commitment and effort, but he needs more help than he got last night.

Fulton should have been hooked at half time last night, I'm guessing a weak bench saved him, Ashby is on a hiding to nothing, a young player with obvious potential but not getting a decent run, Yates will get us goals given better service, easier said than done with our pedestrian midfield of Grimes and Fulton, someone on here the other day was complaining he only scores inside the six yard box, Garry Lineker apparently only scored one goal from outside the box in his career, just saying like... :D

Ashby's obvious potential passing me by so far. He's 22 in a few weeks and if he was one of ours people would be saying get rid, not good enough on current evidence. Not saying they'd be right but other than being pretty quick he does little well.

Amazing how much worse we looked last night without Patino in midfield and with the much weaker than usual fullbacks. Pederson might be a decent defender but his ball skills leave a lot to be desired. Fulton really shouldn't be starting many matches, decent enough as a backup but does half of Grimes' job but worse.

Fair comment.

Think we’ll be going in for Devante Cole in January, out of contract in June and Duff knows him well, he’s had a good start this season and will give us good competition.

I've said for years Fulton shouldn't be anywhere near a starting place, playing him and Grimes together strangles any creativity in the team. And if you are not going to play to Yates strengths ( which is creating chances for him to finish) then we really shouldn't have bought him. He was anonymous Saturday and again last night, lumping balls up to him all night just isn't his game.
