We long since passed the point where social media might once have been a force for good. It has been hijacked and distorted by some pretty dreadful people to the point where it's no longer worth engaging with.

I have to be honest and say I’d never heard of the sidemen and was unaware of the game, but to be fair these guys are getting off their backsides and trying to raise some cash for a good cause. It’s a shame Barton doesn’t @@@@ off.

Before social media, people like Barton would be found perched at the bar in your local.

You had a number of choices to deal with that. You could walk away (usually best). You could try and discuss and talk them round (unlikely, but sometimes worth a go). Or you could tear the piss out of them and mock their bullshit, but that would usually turn ugly and lead to one or both of you being chucked out. But at least it was dealt with. And it only concerned a small handful of people.

Now, people like that can just spout off vile nonsense as much as they like, relatively consequence-free, reaching thousands, if not millions in some cases. It's absolutely bonkers. Humanity has lost its way completely imo.

With the additional negative that those couple of people you'd find perched in the bar, plus those that agreed with them but wouldn't have the balls to say so out loud, can all now reach each other so easily. So although they're still in the minority, it makes them think they're actually the majority and all feel emboldened to speak out more.
