I have never thought Key has been good enough, for me it's been clear since he arrived that he not good enough for the Championship.

Some people say he has all the tools needed, I don't see it he's not particulary quick or strong and his positional sense is terrible. I don't think he has been poorly coached, however I don't think he has been poorly utlised (the inverted fullbacks under Williams was shocking).

At one point both him and Tymon were terrible, yet Tymon has been able to turn around his performances, yes Tymon is better going forwards but his defender has improved weras Key has regressed.

He reminds me of Barrie Mckay when people used to say there is a player in there, for me there isn't (like there wasn't with Mckay) and we need to cut our losses recoup what we can and use his wages elsewhere.

Spot on. Tymon isn't immune from being exposed but at one time both players was playing just as bad. The difference is Tymon worked on his defending and his assists. While Key just went backwards. I understand at end of day he is not just a player but someone with emotions. But cruel as it is we have to move him on and get replacement in January.

You could receive all the support from the club, supporters and other players and despite everyone wanting you to do brilliantly, there's a greater chance it could do squat. Some players are just not that good, and sometimes we need to face up to this fact.

We've seen flashes of great play from Key, sure! It's a shame these flashes don't yield results over a season. Overall, imho, Key, over the last several seasons, has been more of a hindrance than a 'worthy' regular starter who is taking up the space that someone like Parker could excel in if given the opportunities the club has instead been languishing on Key.


Sometimes you just have to call it as you see it.

Perhaps we could kill 2 birds with one stone. Rest Key, and put Ronald at right back. Thus improving my mental health from having to endure watching Ronald from doing Jack s**t out wide, yet again.

Yes, it's amazing how two players who excited us at the start have fallen away so badly. Ronald has actually disappointed me more than Key tbh, though defensively Key is causing us more problems. Confidence definitely an issue there, but I feel that if anyone can bring back the best in him, it's Matos. As for Ronald, I'm not sure at all, he's just so inept at some of the basics I'm amazed he's from Brazil. Perhaps it's Belize

What happens next for him?

I feel a little bit bad for calling him a cxxt on the match day thread. After all he’s just a player, obviously trying to do his best.
I’m pretty sure when he arrived I watched him being an able defender and doing the basics right.

I wonder if it’s just a case that he’s been coached terribly by the former managers we’ve had. Tymon was never able to defend or stay tight either, but has done so since Matos arrived.
Only difference with Tymon is that he’s great at the other end of the pitch.

I wonder if matos and his staff actually coach him on his position. He has all the physical attributes to do well at RB.

Anyway, time will tell, but I’d prefer Parker, Kev Jon’s, or anyone else until he can sort himself out.

I did ponder it, the Matos solution was to bring him on for Ronald where he played through extra time as a right winger who would drop back when Ward pushed forwards.

Key in his youth was a striker/winger so you can see why he better going forward than defending.

He got an assist and well done for that, however I would still be accepting any offer I could. He is a headless chicken and has no positional sense whatsoever (although better to be like that in the opposition half than when defending).

That shows character.
Yes his positional sense is terrible but so was (and maybe still is) Tymon - but Tymon showed that you can improve this element of your game with hard work - and perhaps Ward will be the perfect mentor.
Key has something to work with - and he has been let down by successive coaches whohave arested his development.

No coach or Mentor can imporove speed, accelleration and other physical attributes and i'm not sure that defending attributes can be learned at this stage of his career. He should either be considered as an impact sub or the club should thank him for his service (and so should we) and sell him.

Speed, acceleration and physical attributes can definitely be improved by the strength and conditioning coach, if that’s what a manager deems they need to focus on.

The one big question I have about Josh Key is his football intelligence.

He has made lots and lots of mistakes, and has tended to give the ball away at times, but has always looked better going forwards. His short cameo appearances against wba, where he showed his skills for a lovely assist, in place of Ronald McDonald out wide, was a joy to see.
Give me Key out wide, as opposed to Ronald any day of the week.
Especially with a new manager & assistants, bringing new ideas for him to progress.
He’s still young, by no means slow, can shoot (remember that long range effort) and can cross a ball.
I honestly think there’s a good player in there, who with the right coaching, could do a job out wide.
