Kit release?

Agree you can do both. In which case that’s optimal. But I worry that the local market just isn’t treated with the same degree of importance.

Just a few recent examples of that. First the stupidly late kit launch. Holidays will start next week and people won’t have had the chance to get shirts so you’re losing a big window in missing that.
Secondly, the mascot packages. Insane. I’m sure they’ll be taken up, but the opportunity for kids from all backgrounds in the area to join up to enter draws every week was there and has been lost for the sake of short termism.
Thirdly the lack of focus in clever pricing to address the increasingly empty family stand. Much more could be done in filling that up with potential future supporters week after week.

There are lots of little things that indicate that local supporters are a distant second at the moment to chasing US money.

Look hopefully it all works. And I know people keep saying that they’re experienced in sponsorship etc. but when the new training wear sponsor is a paving company that has about £12k in net assets (according to their accounts in companies house) I’m not convinced we are doing the best we can.

I would certainly hope we haven’t paid Snoop to do a one off given he’s been pictured in endless kits over the years, so let’s hope we are looking at an investment. It’s a weird mix with Modric though…
This is where the Trust needs to be much more active, they are the ones who should be pushing for far more local focus, protecting the interests of local supporters etc.

Kits being out earlier would have been optimal but I’d imagine the snoop dogg alignment has delayed it a fair bit.

The club could however be doing far more locally to build excitement ahead of the new season, and engaging young fans,

It willl be interesting to see if the dial moves on sponsorship deals, the current owners have only been in place for 6-7 months so a bit early to tell. Much of the planning for the current deals would have been done months ago.

The dog bit. Missed it first time. Reynolds kit pic says dog not included that he is holding. Ours Dogg included.

Looks like this is more than just a promo shirt thing with Snoop. From the owners, in the BBC article....

"We appreciate the considerable interest and enthusiasm generated by Snoop Dogg's appearance in a Swansea City shirt," Swansea's ownership group said in a statement.

"While we are not in a position to share specifics with you all just yet, we will be able to provide more details soon and we're excited about what's to come."

Snoop Dogg, now you're talking...even though the kit looks like something you'd pick up in a poop scoop.

I'm just so pleased the celeb it isn't Darran or any of the old fogeys from Cheap Trick.

The ones I know don’t have a commercial bone in their body (Trust people that is).

Some of the current owners have been involved for two years or so now. Additional ones did come in as you say late last year, but let’s hope those new ones have a clue.

The fan base is probably split between those that would be thrilled with a Disney channel documentary about a ‘rivalry’ between us and Wrexham and those that think it would be an embarrassment.

It’s not arrogant or self entitled to think tagging Ryan Reynolds on our kit launch is a cringe fest.

I agree with you about the importance of the business side of things but too often the new breed of football club owners mistake short term noise for long term advantage.

Football is a ‘business’ where the two things are often very separate.

There seems to be little differentiation between customer acquisition in the US for example and locally. In fact, more emphasis is placed on the former (there’s a reason those tweets were put out at a time to catch a US audience rather than local). Obviously it’s a far bigger market. But it’s also a far more temporary market.

If you acquire a US customer because of an association with Snoop for example, what does that mean for the club? A shirt, some merchandise, possibly a subscription to Swans TV until the enthusiasm wears off.

If you acquire a ‘customer’ in Swansea, that could mean a lifetime of going to matches, introducing family to the club by taking kids along, them becoming ‘customers’ for their lifetimes and so on.

Businesses when looking at the commercial side of things look at customer acquisition but more importantly should look at customer lifetime value. What that customer spends with you over the lifetime of their association. A local customer could end up spending thousands more over the lifetime of their association than a US customer.

Wrexham have obviously done hugely well with their Tv contract. Good luck to them. But I am glad it’s not us. It’s a circus. And interestingly they seem to be finding it harder than they perhaps thought to attract players at the moment. And if they don’t, whet will that TV audience do if the success falters for a few seasons. If they don’t continue to enjoy success but stagnate or even get relegated. The audience will, I suspect, begin to melt away and turn to the next thing.

As an aside, the involvement of Modric is positive in my view. The involvement of Snoop will depend on what it is. If he is actually going to be involved as an investor for example, that’s great. If he’s just been paid to wear the shirt, that’s not so great.

Still doesn’t mean involving Wrexham in our kit launch (and I do think we probably put out tweets in the wrong order) and having the pinned post on our site showing a picture of Ryan Reynolds in a Wrexham shirt isn’t crass.
Really good points you make. I agree with the local fan base and they are ultimately what will help generate stadium attendance. But international fans will drive the wider market and brand and as others said is a balance of the 2. It's not a given that everyone in or around Swansea is going to be a Swans fan. They might be influenced by people around them with a man utd shirt or Liverpool etc. But things like this make the club more appeable. The mistake made by alot of brands and growth is not seeing a bigger picture. Never forget your core audience but always be open to expanding your reach. Something we need to do to bring in more people on match days and those around the world.

Agree with much of that, but no reason why you can’t maximise the value of local support base and tap into the more temporary international one.

Influencer marketing exposure is incredibly valuable when you are looking for commercial partners, sponsors etc as it becomes all about reach.

The ownership group ( Popstepanov particularly) are vastly experienced in this area.

I can’t see us having paid for Snoop for a one off piece, much more likely that he is an investor I’d say. That would add significant value in my opinion
Perfectly said. I have worked in marketing for a long time and it's always about getting the right balance while not alienating your fan base completely. Ultimately, if it's long term or short term exposure, it's got people talking. And that can only benefit the club. Many will argue this point
But never underestimate the power of influencers, if done right.

There’s plenty that post on here alone that don’t go to the stadium to watch us. What’s your advice to them?
Not sure your point? It's clear that we had some of the lowest attendance in a while last season. It's always going to be about the blend of increasing this and also international eyes via Swans TV. I don't undertand your argument? I'm both a visitor and a sofa watcher.

You were saying about encouraging more to come to the stadium. How would you encourage those that post on here who don’t attend, to attend.

That should be easier to get down there than people that have never been.
