Matt Grimes, Captain of Coventry City.

We all love a Matt Grimes thread. It brings out the best and the worst in us 😁

FWIW, he was rightly the first name on our team sheet, but was also hampered by the painting by numbers coaching style imposed upon him. We probably shouldn’t be surprised to see him expand his game under the guidance of one of the greatest midfielders of the Premier League era.

Maybe a slightly provocative thread from Swanjaxs, but no harm intended by him and it makes for more great debate.

Too balanced that 😂

Clearly a very good Championship midfielder who was restricted by tactics (under Martin & Williams in particular) and his own reluctance to be more positive.

Be surprised if he plays regularly for Coventry in the Premier League, supported by the fact that none of Potter, Cooper or Martin tried to sign when managing there.

The idea that taking him (or any player who hardly missed a game in 6.5 years) out of the team would transform us into this totally different side is at best naive and more likely agenda driven.

More importantly let’s hope that Matos finds some balance from the 5/6 midfielders he has to choose from over the next month!!

I was sick to the back teeth of Grimes in his final couple of seasons and I think the managers did fail to get a tune out of him, however Grimes himself must also take his share of responsibility for his performances, which were cowardly and towards the end woeful.

He needed the change and that change seems to have done him the world of good.
My point exactly. He couldn't be bothered when he was here, it speaks volumes that only 3 of the players came and said goodbye to him.

If he is actually putting the effort in now whether are some of our fans celebrating and crowing over it when he quite plainly stuck two fingers up to all of us. We should seek redress off him for hiding in between 2 centre backs for a lot of last season.

He played his best football when forced out of his comfort zone hiding between the centre backs. Only Potter and to a lesser extent Duff ever did in the nigh on decade he was here. If Lampard is getting a consistent tune out of him then that's more to his credit than Grimes's.

When watching Grimes play for Coventry he has already spent more time in the opposition half than he did here in a few seasons.

He always had it in him. Even someone as critical of him as I was regularly acknowledged that. I just got tired of waiting either for him to work it out for himself or a manager to force him to.

No regrets over his departure.

I’ve always had the impression that Grimes was being coached to play the way he did here, and I think it’s proven true seeing how well he’s doing at Coventry
