No amount of common sense or logic can lead you to the accurate price of a player. You are guessing, and guessing based on other people’s guesses which is even crazier.

We can state a signing was bad if it turns out to be bad, but we can’t make a judgement on whether it was bad due to cost because we don’t know it.

Bony second spell was bad because he was… bad.

Of course it can, based on what we know, what other players of similar stature go for, what the state of the selling club is etc. Ultimately it will be a guess, but an informed one. From that and their performances I can form an opinion on the quality of the signing. This isnt rocket science, every football fan I know does this.

Bony, if we paid him an apprentices wage would have been mediocre. The fee we probably paid for him (or installments we didn't then receive) and wage we probably paid him made the signing an absolute disaster. Potentially the worst in club history.

You can’t because you don’t know the structure of the deal or what will actually be paid. You are saying you base it on other deals you don’t know, there is a key flaw there…

That's just your comfort blanket blindspot.

Fair play if this blissful ignorance works for you.

It’s just the cold hard truth of the matter. You are making judgements based on things you have no clue about, and then backing it up by saying you are making those judgements based on other clubs transfers you don’t know about. Barking.

So we can never make a judgement based on a transfer fee because they're always undisclosed these days & we can't believe what's reported - ok 👍

What sort of name is Melker anyway? Should be Maldwyn or something sensible.

I swear we either have some of the most negative fans going, or there is a huge expectation mismatch. We’re a small club in the arse end of nowhere in the grand scheme of things. We’re not going to compete with the big teams in finances or ability to attract players. Yes we were in the premier league for a long time but that was a massive overachievement. Even being in the championship is good going for us. I think a lot of people are setting themselves for constant disappointment with their expectations.

I’m with trucker jack in that there have been some massive positive changes in the way the club is being run. Even if our spot in the table looks crap right now, Swansea have laid a solid foundation down for the next few seasons. I think they’re doing their best with the tools they have at their disposal.

It’s the same with the players, the players we have are the players we can afford to have, and the players who are willing to come here. That unfortunately means that we have to get players who aren’t from our league and need time to adjust. But we’re doing the best thing by signing young players who are on long contracts and have potential to be better. Not all of them will be successful, but if we get one or two that really push on to become great players that we can sell for a big profit that is a success. Even if they don’t quite reach that potential they essentially become free from other sales and will still be useful members of the squad. Of course they will get it wrong for some players and that is just the reality of football. That doesn’t mean that it’s a failing of the club or the scouting team, because it’s an inevitability.

Right now though it’s way too early to tell with any of our new signings which way they’ll go. And writing them off is pretty premature.

Have a clap 👏 THE most sensible post on this thread.

We do have clues though, plenty, for pretty much every transfer. You just pretend we don't.

And if those clues turn to out to be completely false, well you couldn't disprove it anyway by your own logic.

No you don’t, you have guesses. Even if the headline figure is right, you don’t know what needs to happen for that to be realised. It may be largely made up of clauses which may never be hit. You are right, I can’t disprove the guesses either, that’s why they are useless to base your judgement on.

How do you know all news we hear about transfer fees are guesses then? Are you saying that agents, players themselves, managers, staff, clubs, governing bodies, other players, players families etc etc etc never knowingly or unknowingly leak this sort of information?

Or is this another of your convenient blindspots?

Because they aren’t in the negotiations, when Gorringe was asked he laughed at the fees reported. There is no benefit for the paying or receiving club to give out accurate information on fees and there is no benefit for agents or family members to do that either.

Ask yourself who benefits more from a reported fee being higher than the actual one, or one that ignores the payment structure and add on clauses. Is it the club that is buying or the club that is selling? It’s also in the interest of the player and the agent to be seen as commanding the highest fee possible.

Regardless of how accurate the fee is or isn’t, I don’t understand how some people use it as a noose to hang a player with as soon as they come through the door.

Doesn't mean they dont know. Players talk, managers talk, agents talk.

Depends on the circumstances, there is sometimes benefits to clubs leaking this stuff. Maybe an owner wants to show ambition, maybe they want to demonstrate their shrewdness. Could be any number of reasons.
