New Manager

Russell Martin and Luke Williams the anti Christ of football. The EFL should take out restraining orders on both of them to keep them away from football. The pair of minges.

The fallacy with Martin was that his logic is that the more possession you have, the more chances you will have than the opposition. Rodgers and Laudrup's logic was that the more possession you have, the more opportunities you will get to create chances than the opposition. They realised that you still had to create the chances while Martin just assumed they would come and they quite clearly didn't.
And that the other team 'wouldn't be able to run anymore', the daft flange.

Someday LW and RM will realise this only holds true if you actually make the opposition run.

Walking speed paint by numbers football, a properly fit team could defend against that for 90 hours let alone 90 minutes.

Martin/Williams football is possession football done badly.

Whereas Roberto, Brendan and Laudrup wanted to hog the ball for a purpose - to hurt teams using pace and trickery - their version is quite literally possession for possession's sake. Everything is sacrificed at the altar of ball retention. Goals, fun, risk, speed - chuck it all in the bin, just don't you dare lose the ball.

They've actually got more in common with Paulo Sousa Swans on that front. Except, at least his team could defend properly.

They shouldn't be considering Sheehan at all, even if he wins every remaining game.

Last time we gave a manager the boot at this time of the season was Laudrup, and then just because Monk got a bounce for 3 months, we made the fateful decision to give him it permanently. We all know what happened next.

We need a coach who has a bit of a CV and is worth taking a punt on. We need a steady pair of hands, someone who knows what they are doing and ideally has a 100+ managerial games under their belt. It's time to stop the punts on unknown quantities.
I am on the fence. I fear we will do a man utd and an Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Who knows if or how good he can be. It's all a gamble and glad I don't make the decisions. But I do agree we need experience. How long will the honey moon period last? Will his experience or there lack of work against him or with. Williams acted like he was Pep, but couldn't back it. Only his looks 😂. But I think get to safety and bring in top quality in summer. If we can 😁😁

Spot on. 10000%

I see nothing wrong with anything he has said in that interview if I am being honest.

I do agree that we need to escape the trap of the "Swansea Way" being equal to "slave to possession football".
Tiki Taka style needs a very specific subset of players and a coach who can bring the best out of those players. If either is lacking you ever find yourself haemorrhaging high quality chances or being mind numbingly boring (or worse both).

I like how he has set the expectation that we might not have our new manager in place before the season ends which lines up with how many of us felt we should handle the second half of this season. Stabilize with Sheehan who based on the two stints so far as caretaker coach has proven to be a safe pair of hands while getting in the best possible coach to fit our desired playing model.

I'm slightly concerned about the references to "Identity". It either suggests that we're looking for another possession merchant or he thinks that's what people want to hear.

Passing football is good. Possession football is tedious.
Andrew - North Hill - for me said it perfectly. In relation to possession and purpose.

Nothing wrong with possession as long as it's done right. Williams was about passing back. Watching every game he spent more time pointing at our own goal to encourage to hold and pass back. Martin was all about messing around at the back. I want Laudrup style personally.

Montague says playing philosophy will be a key factor in the recruitment process.

He believes getting results through possession-based football "has to be the goal" for a club whose considerable successes in the last two decades have been based on that approach.

"The important bit for me is that we find somebody who, alongside vital things like character, how they engage with players and engage with supporters and how they are as a leader of the football club, is at the forefront of where the game is going," Montague said.

"It's somebody who can help us be true to our identity, which I think is so important. I have never come across a club that has such a strong identity in terms of playing style.

"We need to be at the forefront of what's going on in football, on the data side, the recruitment side, strength and conditioning, the medical side. That's the only way to get to where we want to get to.

"So as long as we have somebody who respects our traditions but also wants to drive the club forward tactically, that's fine with me, as long as that leads to us performing well on the pitch."

Here we go again. Insert that quote about insanity, repeating mistakes etc yourself if you wish. I cant be bothered.

I understand your concern and we need to evolve. I did a thread last week in relation to what is the Swansea way. I'm not going into this, but I wouldn't rip up the book and start from scratch on what little identity we have. So I undertand his point about possession. Knowone would ever come in and say we are playing long ball now, who is out there. I would say have possession but with purpose as others have said 👍

This RM seems the real deal - a breath of fresh air, in lots of ways.

Intelligence is a massive thing, a proper edge. He seems to have bundles of IQ, EQ and FQ (footballing intelligence).

As a Club we have been at both the leading edge and the bleeding edge. The leading edge is now back within our sights.

RM is looking to get us back at the vanguard of leading edge - our 'identity' is such a massive differentiator. For those of us who were inculcated in that 'identity' from an early age (on the pitch, esp) his words are music to our ears.

We are evolving again.
The next, next level of the Swansea Way beckons.
Exciting times …..

You're making the assumption that possession football is inevitably slow tempo stuff. Not correct. Bielsa's teams dominate the ball but are as direct as you get, to the point of recklessness. But exhilarating to watch if you can stomach the occasional thrashing.

Of the managers who we could realistically attract Kim Hellberg of Hammarby in Sweden is young, and has a reputation for possession heavy (59% last season) but also direct football, and hard pressing out of possession. He's exactly the sort of manager we should be looking at. His win percentage with Hammarby is virtually identical to Cifuentes' (his predecessor) before he joined QPR. He also took over Varnamo when they arrived in the top flight for the first time in their history, taking them to 10th then 5th place in successive seasons. So has excellent pedigree for one so young.

"Värnamo’s style of play is very vertical, but far from the traditional meaning of direct.

Rather than a hit-and-hope approach, Värnamo is a side that uses numeric overloads to ruthlessly break lines and run at the opponent.

They’re not afraid to play over the opposition with thoughtful passes into streaking wingers, but their most modus operandi is to play into high targets between the lines while keeping the ball on the ground."

What's not to like?
