It would be a mess.

Teams would launch the ball from one goalkeeper to the other.
 
There would be no midfield. Defenders and goal hangers in both areas.
 
That would probably be too fundamental a change and could change the way the game is played too much. A better idea IMO which has been mooted many times over the years, would be to extend the 18 yard lines out to the touchlines and only have offsides between the 18 yard and goal lines. This would tend to spread the play out as defences wouldn't push up so far but wouldn't change how the game is played apart from favouring attacking which is not necessarily a bad thing from the entertainment point of view.

I agree but I would place it at halfway between the box and center line, so around 35 yards out?

That was tried and rejected years ago wasn't it. Better in my view to reinforce the offside law to be if you ar offside in the zone you mention, then you are offside. No 'interfering with play' bollocks. But...offside defined as your feet being beyond the last defender.
