In all seriousness though and back on topic we should have offered him improved terms back in October or so when it was obvious that we had a real gem, while our bargaining position with 2 years left is pretty strong it would have been a damn sight stronger if he had 3 years left to run considering that teams put off by the asking price wouldn't want to risk sitting on their hands if he has another strong season and the demand for him goes up even higher.

Right now we are in the position where if teams do not come in for him and we fail to go up he will have only one year left on his deal and the ability to demand a proper fee diminishes greatly especially if we fail to go up next season.

The issue is whether any of them have the competence to extract an appropriate value.

With Covid past us now we should be looking at market prices from 19/20 summer period. Based on his stats which compare very well with Oli Watkins (26 goals 3 assists for Oli vs 24 goals 6 assists for Joel) at similar ages we should be looking for between £25m and £30m for him.

Of course the question is if we have the brass and the competence to demand that and stick to it.

They won’t have forgotten how he was publicly humiliated by Martin last year.

I'm not on about our bargaining position with them, I'm on about other clubs. He's off regardless so we need to get as much as we possibly can. Making public there is no interest his side on entering talks with us doesn't help that cause, imo anyway.

In fairness this time round, the club have said they are open to talks with the player, the player's agent has knocked us back.
If we had made a derisory offer, no offer or were selling against the player's will, then I can understand blaming the club.
In this instance, seems to me the player is the one pushing for the move, so club has a choice to either cash in or take a chance on getting more for another good or better season and possible promotion.
Also an unsettled player in the ranks isn't the best ?

The time to try to improve his deal was when his stock was rising but before he became a hot commodity.
It was obvious to most in September/October that we had a real gem on our hands and we should have tried to offer him an improved deal with improved wages then.
