Playing out from the back

The way we did it under Rodgers was simple enough and was obviously effective as it got us promoted AND kept us up in our first season.

Two centre halves splitting to the edges of the box, CDM dropping into the split to offer a third option and the full backs up near the halfway line. Five out balls that any goalkeeper with respectable distribution can pull off (and Vigouroux is capable of that)
And from there the philosophy was to play in triangles with one or two other players getting into position to receive the ball. It was very much a case of pass and move, now it’s simply pass and pass.

Doesn't help when the majority of back four's first touch is a tackle.

Surprised (well not really) that there are no objections to Vigouroux and our Centre backs hoofing away a lot of possession. Vigouroux has one of the best long ball accuracies in the league, but he still loses possession 57% of the time from long balls. No coincidence that he only delivered 10 long balls in the QPR game, down from 30 in the Hull game.

Swansea fans really should know better than dissing building out from the back. The problem is that we don't do this enough under Williams. Far too many long balls from Vigouroux, the centre backs and Grimes.

It’s frequently pass and stand still and admire your completed pass.

Not sure anyone is dissing building out from the back. It's more a frustration of persevering with something that we don't do very well.

Personally I still feel we do this too much under Williams, not as much as we did rather unsuccessfully under his predecessor

We also pass behind the player, or where he is standing, and the pass is delivered with the ball moving at snail speed, at least 30 seconds after it should have been played. God alone knows what they do in training.

Oh, well, that, obviously 🤣

Cambridge United manager in the early 90's John Beck used to offer cash bonuses to the player who could kick the ball the furthest in training, proper old skool football ⚽

It's just nuts.

Managers demanding their players to automatically play out from the back on restart is just bollox...over and over again teams get caught out, and every time a goal is scored against this dumb tactic I have a little titter..
We're trying to emulate Barcelona, our fans are obsessed with the "SwANseA WaY!". It's stupid. We haven't got players who can execute these kind of tactics.

It's actually a very effective tactic WHEN you've got the players to do it.

I want us to play fast, back-to-front attacking football. But our board and fans demand fake-a-lona football which bores me to tears.

Thought you were a Cardiff fan though 🤔

It's not a choice between 'passing football' or 'Long ball hoof'. There are many kinds of passing football. The brand we played - play - under Martin and Williams is the worst kind. Williams now gets Vig to hoof too, to supposedly mix up his 1000 touches a game. This is also mostly gash.

The problem under Williams is that we don't play through the thirds anywhere near enough. Far too often we get Vigouroux, the centre backs and Grimes to hit long diagonals. They have little choice as the distances to Franco, Cullen and the inverted full backs are generally enormous.

Get the ball in to the opposition's penally box as soon as possible.

This passing for the sake of passing is killing me.

I find it bizarre that we seem to have a plan to get the ball into the oppositions half and no plan once we get there. So we just reset and go back to Vig to start al over again.
