I suspect it's got a lot to do with the way that the game has moved towards statistical analysis where it seems like absolutely every key decision is data driven. You can imagine some DoF more skilled in spreadsheets than coaching falling in love with one of Russy's Powerpoint presentations.

Us mere mortals who just watch his teams play know full well that he's an absolutely hopeless manager.
