Despite the defeat there’s a fair amount of encouragement to take from that, gave them a pretty good run for their money but a mix of youthful naivety and grey areas of quality meant we fall foul of slightly superior quality again.
Getting closer and I don’t think our deficiencies will be missed by the coaching staff and the board.

Still can’t comprehend how Downes didn’t see red.

I just watched the replay and Downes could have had 2 red cards … first he absolutely smashes Cullen in the face with his elbow… then he puts his hands around Widell’s throat on the floor. Absolute lunatic.

Can’t even be too gutted with that today. Thought it was one of our better performances against a top side this season. Played some good one touch stuff at times and didn’t really get dominated. A bit like the Boro game, Saints had the ball in dangerous areas but didn’t threaten Vigs too much.

You can see we’re trying to play out at times but don’t look 100% comfortable doing it. I expect that control element will come after we have a window with Matos and he gets a pre-season.

Widell was excellent today, he really just needs that goal but otherwise he was one of the better players on the pitch. Thought the same of Eom too. There is more development to come with some of these players.

We’ve definitely got the fight and energy, let’s see if we can add a bit more quality to that.

Should of got a red. And I would say that if we did that to them. You can't wrestle a player to the ground. Another appalling referee today.

Parker and Eom bossed the right hand side until the switch, Widdel was superb, as were Franco and Tymon. Wish Yalcoue had started.
Downes incident on our side of the pitch, right in front of the ref and linesman, never been so sure of anything in my life that he was gone.
Once again though, same as Coventry, the top teams only play one way - forward.

Another note on the ref, fucking useless as he was.

2 of our players get fouled 1st half within seconds of each other-no card.
Stamenic a few minutes later with his first foul-yellow card.

Our bench were the most animated I have seen them this season.

They crossed the ball into dangerous areas countless times but they couldn’t capitalize until late on. Great first half from us where we more than matched them but they couldn’t capitalize performance fell off a cliff after half time.
Burgess made so many errors but a mate told me he is the only championship player to play every minute of this season . I’m not sure if that’s true or not but if so how on earth have we left ourselves so bare at CB? Crazy to push players so hard in such a demanding league

Very disappointed we didn’t get at least a point from that game, i was sitting West Stand and immediately thought red card for Downes it was swinging and aimed at the head, he then had Widdell on the floor and kicked out at Franco in the melee. The Eom pull by Woods was again bang in front of me and how the Lino who failed to give numerous very easy offside decisions didn’t act I don’t now.

On the basis we didn’t deserve a point up there but got one i have to accept thats football but i enjoyed our play and attacking intent today, a few good chances left out there.

Ian Walsh on BBC sport website said “Swans didn’t get to grip with the game and didnt effect the game at all” which i thought was a very strange comment to make as i thought it was end to end.

Lino on west side was poor as well. Missed a few offsides including Vipotnik for us in the 2nd half.

It's becoming frustrating with these refs even with today's game which was a nothing game for us regards promotion or relegation.

To be fair to him, on one occasion it was because he'd won the ball back and had around 5 Southampton players closer to him than any of ours. Given it was 1-1 at the time, it was probably the right decision to slow play down and keep the ball.
As i said, that's the negativity in our thinking, that worked out well then because we lost the game.

I was surprised at how much they crossed the ball to be honest, I haven’t seen too much of them this season but I expected them to be slicing through the middle of us as we can be vulnerable there. We dealt quite well with the crosses despite conceding from two of them. I think that is true re Burgess, he must be knackered. We definitely need at least one CB this summer and preferably one who is comfortable playing out.

The alternative was he ran at 5 players and inevitably got tackled. Thinking decisions like that cost us the game is nonsense.

I’m sure I read he’s the only outfield player in the whole of the EFL to have played every minute.

I know Ash played 46 games in his 3 seasons in the Championship with us but it’s becoming less and less common.
