STEVE COOPER | IT WAS A DESERVED WIN

Source: Swansea Official Site

Steve Cooper hailed a tactically disciplined showing and a deserved win as Swansea City closed to within two points of the top of the Championship with a 2-0 victory over Norwich.

Andre Ayew and Conor Hourihane got the goals at the Liberty Stadium, Ayew netting from close range just before the break, with Hourihane hammering home shortly after the restart.

The result moved the Swans back up to second in the table, two points behind the Canaries with a game in hand.

And head coach Cooper, having been unhappy with his side’s display in possession against fellow high-fliers Brentford, felt this was an excellent all-round showing.

“I thought we were tactically brilliant first half, in terms of where we thought we could show Norwich with the ball, where we could win it and where we could attack,” he said.

“Whenever we put together a few passes we looked dangerous and looked as though we could create and score.

“We looked a good threat, we got the breakthrough with Andre, and then started the second half brilliantly with a great goal from Conor.

“It was wonderful composure initially from Jay Fulton on the turnover, we asked at half-time to manage the turnovers better.

“We gave up a lot of territory and the ball after the goal, but that is normal and natural. For all Norwich’s possession and decent play, Freddie had not had a major save to make.

“It was a deserved win.”

COOPER DEDICATES NORWICH WIN TO MITCHELL POWELL

Source: Swansea Official Site

Steve Cooper dedicated Swansea City’s win over Norwich City to the memory of Mitchell Powell, after the Swans fan sadly passed away earlier this week.

The East Stand season ticket holder died after a lifelong battle with a heart condition, and was renowned for his charity fundraising efforts, and was close to a number of staff at the club.

And, following the 2-0 victory over the Canaries, head coach Cooper opened his post-match press conference by paying tribute to him.

“I would like to dedicate the result to Mitchell Powell,” said Cooper.

“We have lost one of the Jack Army in awful, tragic circumstances, and as a football club our heart goes out to the family.

“We wish them well, and if there is anything we can do for them then we will do our best.

“That is at the forefront of the club’s mind, so I am really pleased on that front that we won the game.”

MATT GRIMES HAILS "FANTASTIC" WIN

Source: Official Site

Captain Matt Grimes hailed Swansea City's “fantastic” victory over Norwich City as Steve Cooper’s men moved up to second in the Championship table.

Goals from Andre Ayew and Conor Hourihane either side of half-time sealed victory as they cut the gap to the league leaders to just two points.

The win saw the Swans make it 10 games unbeaten in all competitions, as well going 12 matches without defeat on home soil.

And the skipper was full of praise for his team-mates following a fine victory over the Canaries.

“I think we're in a really good place at the moment,” said Grimes.

“These are exciting times ahead, but we just focus on one game at a time and see where it takes us. We're in a great spot and it was a fantastic win. Two goals and a clean sheet - happy days.”

The win saw the Swans chalk up their 15th clean sheet in the league this season; they currently have the best defensive record in the EFL.

And Grimes was quick to heap praise on the collective effort following another shut out on home soil.

“The gaffer's now had 18 months or so to implement the way he wants us to work, and you're seeing it every day on the pitch,” he said.

“We're a solid team and tough to break down. When we were two goals up, they were having a little bit more of the ball than what we'd like, but it's natural and we defended well to see out the clean sheet.”

The win over Norwich saw Ayew open the scoring – the Ghanaian’s first goal in six games.

Meanwhile, on-loan Hourihane's strike means he has scored in each of his first three league games – the first Swans player to record that feat at since Michu in 2012.

“Andre's a top-class player,” said Grimes. “He knows that a goal is just around the corner if he hasn't scored for a couple of games. I'm pleased for him and pleased for the team getting the three points.

“With Conor we come to expect it three games in! He's obviously got a fantastic left foot and if you give him space and time that far out, he can hurt you.”
