Season 24/25 | The Official Match Thread | Swansea City 2 Sunderland 3 | The EFL Championship

Am I furious about losing? No
Am I furious about the manner of the loss? Absofuckinglutely

Our collective footballing IQ in that second half was appalling. Too many players trying to dribble or do clever flicks or being caught miles out of position, everything the opposite of what we did for the first 20 minutes when it looked like we were going to bend Sunderland over and take them to the cleaners.

Grimes Tymon and Key were the biggest culprits.

Grimes, Tymon, and Key were utter dogshit. So was Ronald. Franco was out powered (he was in midfield all on his own most of the time).

Fair play to Sunderland - their pressing and energy have been incredible. To be honest we’ve done ok just to live with that.

It’s been a cracking game to watch, just annoying we couldn’t manage it.

Let’s stay positive- this is SO much better to watch than 6-8months ago!
Load of bolloxs.

Kinell.
Our fans need to wake up to the fact that it’s all a combo of Williams being out his depth and Cabungle dragging us back.
We’re always on the back foot, 15yds deeper than we ought to be, most esp Matty ….etc etc etc

Untill we can win home games against opponents higher than us we will go nowhere, Sunderland are not a bad side as the result shows , and they are 3rd tonight because we left them off the hook, we still have not beaten a side above us in the top 6 not easy i know but if we want to play with these teams we have to finish them off

Psychologically they're weak when playing a team they perceive as better than them. Every time they crumble and refuse to even fight.

It needs to be seriously addressed with a sports psychologist.

It’s the manager’s job. Ffs.

Williams ‘Needs To’ own it. He’s looking ever more like a Martin fraud.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news. We will beat and draw against enough dog teams to maybe top out at 12th-14th. Hell, we might even make the Martincrap zenith of 10th. Williams is ok but he ain’t getting us higher than mid table. He, like most of our players, simply is bang average, at best. We’ll do better against Hull. QPR and Luton again, or he might as well pack his bags, because lose those and he has nothing.

Player ratings:

Vigouroux: 7
Distribution was decent but not his best, no chance with any of the goals consistently left to fend for himself and sometimes I feel sorry for him.

Tymon: 2
The left back often is left back... way out of position. This time he didn't justify it with any good delivery and just left Darling and Cabango consistently exposed. Guilty of sticking out a lazy leg in the first half which led to their free kick for the first goal.

Darling: 6
Despite conceding three none were the fault the keeper of centre halves which tells you everything.

Cabango: 5
Daft way to concede possession in the first half with an even dafter decision to pull the player down with plenty of cover. That aside the third goal came from his position but in fairness he was tracking a runner at the near post.

Key: 2
Messi he is not, he has GOT to stop trying to dribble past the entire team from the right back position. I would be interested to know at the moment just how many goals we have conceded as a result of his losing possession in our own half. Weak defensively for their first goal which was against the run of play and gave them hope of getting back into the game.

Grimes: 2
Sloppy in possession when his position demands the opposite. Tried to dribble out of a tight space on the right hand touchline and lost the ball which directly led to their equalizer since he wasn't in the usual position he should be to close down the goalscorer. Must stop being a third centre half / quarterback he is killing us positionally when he does that.

Franco: 6
Playing the more advanced of the two midfielders, he often found himself having to cover the entire middle of the pitch because of Grimes wandering into defence. Won the free kick for Cullen's goal and was a nuisance for the opposition, just too isolated because of positional issues elsewhere in the team.

Cullen: 7
One of the few outfield players to emerge with any credit, scored a cracking free kick and didn't deserve to be on the losing side. Involved in a lot of build up play and is in the best form of his career.

Ronald: 4
Never looked a threat to the opposition full backs, I don't recall a single occasion where he beat his man and put in a meaningful ball. Actually I lie, once in the start of the second half when his cut back was just about deflected out of Vipotnik's path.

Peart Harris: 4
Same as Ronald, a bit of nice interplay with Cullen but never delivered any service into the box for Vipotnik to feed off.

Vipotnik: 7
His best game so far in a Swansea shirt. His control bringing down the high ball from clearances was overall excellent and he ran himself into the ground closing down and harrying defenders. Took his goal well.

Manager: 2
This inverted full backs experiment is killing us. We are constantly leaving acres and acres of space in the full back positions when we lose the ball, good sides are just creating overloads with two or more players lurking in the position where the full backs should be. He has to stop Grimes from coming into the defenders positions as it is isolating everyone else.

We are consistently giving up the initiative in games, other than a single half chance for Vipotnik we didn't fashion a single opportunity in the second half and we were the side in the lead at home.

Ronald was sleeping for their 3rd goal.

Cabango is fine when asked to play as a conventional central defender.
If you ask him to win his aerial duels and then move the ball on to someone else who can actually be responsible for possession and create opportunities he is a solid defender.

If you ask him to play it out from the back and expect him to be Ashley Williams then you will be consistently disappointed because he always has that mistake in him.

Thought it said a lot that Franco was arguably our best player today, and he was running a one man midfield for majority of the game
