Season 24/25 | The Official Match Thread | Swansea City vs Gillingham FC | The Carabao Cup

Team for Saturday:

Vigou
Key
Tymon
Darling
Pedersen
Grimes
Naughton (instead of Fulton, something diff and we saw a bit of Naughton QB under previous)
Ronald
Eom
Franco
Vipo

Cabango has to be benched (sorry Bango fans)
Cullen could play 10 with Franco moving back in place of Naughton.

Agree with that

Full time scores for me:

Vigouroux - 7
Couldn't do much about the goal. Hardly had anything to do today, almost played a stunning assist from a goal kick
Naughton - 7
Solid, tried to encourage Abdulai to attack but couldn't get him to. Right side stalled a lot, not Naughts fault
Cabango - 6
At fault for the cross that they scored from. The only real opportunity they had and he let himself get outfought
Pedersen - 7
Hardly any defending to do but did it well. Kept the ball moving
Tjoe-A-On - 7
Linked well with Ronald, very good audition to stay on as backup for Tymon
Grimes - 6
Still guilty of dropping too deep between the centre halves, combined with Fulton's lack of positional awareness left monstrous gaps in midfield with no out ball on offer
Fulton - 3
The biggest weak link in the side right now. Goes missing for huge periods, when he shows up its always a one touch pass backwards without even looking up. Once there was a striker between him and Cabango and 20 yards of open space behind him if he even bothered to look, instead he worked an angle to pass it back to Cabango
Abdulai - 6
Might feel harsh to score him a 6 as he scored a goal, but a less generous referee would have sent him off before then. Ineffective in an attacking sense, a pointless yellow stopping a free kick when we had tons of people back and then could have easily had a second yellow booting the ball away after the ref had blown because it had gone out of play already. Wing is not his position but even so his footballing IQ right now is pretty worrying
Cooper - 7
Buzzed around the top part of midfield, some really eye pleasing link play with Ronald and Tjoe-A-On. Never really had an opportunity to shoot or put a dangerous ball in to Zan who despite all the possession was still criminally starved of service
Ronald - 9
My man of the match. Was hungry, attacking, exciting and got a well deserved goal and unfortunate to slip when also put clean through in the second half. That right back would have been glad to see him leave the pitch...until Eom replaced him and continued the torture.
Vipotnik - 7
One half chance aside from a cross/shot curler from Ronald in the first half, the lack of service into Zan was criminal. There were so many times he played on the shoulder of the defender looking for either a slide rule pass or a cross to attack, or even just a ball to feet to invite runners to play it into and we offered him none of those. Not his fault but that must have been an incredibly frustrating night for him, especially since we brought on crossers galore and brought him off at the same time.

Eom - 9
After Ronald there was Eom, he came on and tormented that full back some more. Other than their keeper who also had an amazing game that full back will definitely be the Gillingham player who most felt that he had been in a game. Got himself an assist and could have got more. Also an unfortunate slip in the box when 1 v 1 with the keeper
Key - 8
One way to fix Abdulai's lack of attacking instincts is to force him into it. Key underlapped him over and over demanding the ball down the line and we got immediate joy out of it. Got an assist within minutes of coming on the pitch and could have easily had 1 or 2 more
Tymon - 7
Not quite the impact as Key but still a strong performance. Showing better link play with Eom with each game they play together
Cullen - 7
Got his goal, could have got another one or two. Helped that service was coming in to him compared to Zan.
Franco - 7
Broke up a couple of counters, buzzed around and helped the ball move around. Still not convinced he is an offensive player at heart, he feels more like a play breaker than a play maker and we wont see his best until he play him as such

Tymon was at fault for the cross he gave the player too much room but Cabango got beayen to the ball

Tymon had been part of a defensive line just inside the box. When the ball was played to the player that crossed it in he was a good 15 yards or so away from him, he would never have gotten there in time to block the cross so the next best thing was to be far enough away that he could react in time to a low cross.

That was all down to Cabango ball watching and not keeping an eye on his man, if he had then he could have easily marked him out of the cross or at least stop him getting a clean run and jump on it so that Vigouroux had a chance to save it

Well that was frustrating at best. First half we played at a pre season game. Gillingham offered very little but we showed nothing in an attempt to break them down. Even against 10 men we struggled to create. At least the late subs brought some action and tempo. Short lived and we nearly messed it up. Couple of close chances and we could have killed the game off. Still much work and incoming needed as we can't rely on a couple of players to be game changers.
We can't play this style in the championship with just a starting eleven. We will get picked.off without the team playing at a higher tempo

The saving grace is we won't have a Championship playing that deep against us. Saying that can we ever keep a clean sheet

We really need to do something about that magnet that constantly draws the ball back to the halfway line when we find ourselves in attacking positions.

Also, why does every corner get played short and end up back on the halfway line?

In open play, we start in the centre circle and eventually work the ball into a position for a cross or shot, before going back to the centre circle and starting all over again.

Final takeaway from tonight's game, just play Grimes at CB. The shape of the team is a mess because he wants to play his NFL quarter back role.
Tonight reminded me of a Mourinho quote when he took over at United about Rooney playing in midfield: "You can tell me his pass is amazing but my pass is amazing too without pressure."

For now I am happy enough to take the positives.

3 goals, next round of the cup, first win of the season, plenty of game time for all the new boys and we got decent auditions from Pedersen and Tjoe-A-On that suggest they are capable of at least providing competition for places with their squad mates and reducing the need to recruit said competition.

Fulton has to go, put Abdulai in there, that's his position after all, I'm done with Fults, been a big fan of his for a long time, but he has to go now!

Gonna be same old season. Needing to score at least twice to win a game. The Korean will be our saving grace/Looks a proper talent, and gotta hope he and Ronnie can start crossing the ball.

Their first thought is can I beat a man, there's hope yet, but I got a feeling that Williams Is exactly like Russ, safety first, teams get out of this division by throwing the kitchen sink at it, not this cautious bollocks we've adopted.. too much PowerPoint bollocks is going on down there.. beat a man, cross, find space, anticipate anything.. Williams is doing the same as Russ, Statball..
