The UK electoral system needs to catch up now. It was never fit for purpose but it suited the two party hegemony. That model now seems to be dead and first past the post needs to die with it.

I’ve met cockett he’s a lovely man.
Was great meeting you.

PC have fallen short of a majority so wonder what happens next, will Welsh Labour marry up? Unlikely I suppose. This must be the end of Starmer Shirley? Not sure how he can survive this

Separatist parties are now governing Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Now I’m not suggesting that a majority in any of those nations/regions want to break away from the UK at this point. But it’s very clearly only a matter of time.

Nah, Brexit has proven itself for ten years now to be a net minus gain for the UK. Thought it was stupid then and even more so now. Reform’s ‘take’ on pretty much everything they stand for makes me somewhat anxious about the UK’s future and the rights of people in the UK who may not be ‘seen to be British’. Disappointed that they have done so well in Wales. Second biggest party! And if we are honest (let’s be) a bit or a big bit of the PC vote is not for them but to try to resist Reform
That was the plan, stop reform. It still is a two horse race and still left v right. Reform have done too well in Wales and what appears to be a right wing social media frenzy feed had almost done its job. Christ knows what actually happens next because the pie Wales gets from Central Govt is not getting any bigger and any plans they have means sacrifices in areas not mentioned.

Reckon you’re right on Scotland and NI. Scotland came very close so was on the precipice and if reform win the GE then I would have thought that would perhaps be enough to push them over the edge particularly given how the world has changed since. NI seems to be naturally moving towards ‘that’ demographically. Seems difficult to see us going independent though, such a different kettle of fish

Reform vote dropped from 41% last year to 33% this year. They're f***ed. Peaked and done. When Labour get a proper leader and win back their core, Brexshit Fartage will disappear back up Trump's arsehole.

What would you like to see - direct proportion or AV etc?
Ridiculous if it’s not changed but I’m assuming the process would take years to get passed and already too late for the next General Election?
A simple act of parliament could change the system to a properly proportional one for UK elections. That could easily be done in time for 2029. It won’t be though.

Appreciate this isn’t imaginative but if we had proportionate democracy then it would lead to rainbow democracies and can you picture that working here…at all?

Well yes. It would have to. Imagine a result where a party has 400 out of 650 seats in the legislature on 33% of the vote. What an affront to democracy that would be. Hang on, you don’t have to imagine it. It happened on 4 July 2024.

It’s certainly not working currently with polarising of opinions across the board.

You’d think that following the example of some more grown up European countries and politicians leading by example and actually listening to each other and cooperating might filter down to the populous at large.

There’s clearly no utopian situation but having the number of politicians that roughly corresponds to your overall share of the vote would surely give people more confidence and belief in the system and encourage people to vote for who they actually prefer.

A Reform government in Westminster would be the catalyst I would think.
