I sincerely hope that the next manager is a good appointment and is massively successful, however what you have said goes both ways. There's a good chance that the players we've signed are not that good and no manager will be able to do that much with them. If that's the case, people like yourself will continue to blame the manager and carry on claiming we have a talented squad that needs the right manager.
Broken record comes to mind,we haven’t even appointed a manager yet but it’s pretty obvious where you stand in all of this.

Every time our coach leaves, especially since Laudrup, I’m reminded of Sir Alex Ferguson’s first six seasons at Manchester United:

SeasonPosPldWDLFAGD
1986-8711th421414145245+7
1987-882nd40231257138+33
1988-8911th381312134535+10
1989-9013th3813164647–1
1990-916th381612105845+13
1991-922nd42211566333+30

I suppose that patience is a concept that’s gradually disappearing nowadays - in general, and in football as well.

I don't know what changed in his mentality or coaching methods between when he took over as interim coach last February and this summer into this season. The aggressive high press and swift transition from winning the ball high up the pitch and getting in behind defenders out of position disappeared entirely.

People point to Lewis O'Brien but he wouldn't have been solely responsible for a concerted heavy press as opposed to the dribs and drabs of pressure that always left an out ball that we experienced for almost all of this season.

After one good half against Man City with 5 4 1 Sheehan then obsessed over it for the next four games resulting in arguably our worst performances of the season and persisted with it even when a goal or two down in games.

I always hate to see managers sacked (ours at least) but something had to change and after the Ipswich horror show there was never going to be better timing. A week and a bit (hopefully) for a new manager to get his feet under the desk with the international break and get some of his ideas to the players and then about two months to work out what he wants to add to the squad in the January window.
I don’t think it was solely Lewis O’Brien but him and Franco suited each other perfectly as a pressing midfield. Add in Joe Allen’s experience and that was just the right balance. I don’t believe the midfielders we’ve got now can play in that way effectively, which makes the emphasis we’ve seemingly put on out of possession play quite strange.

Complete armchair psychologist here but I think the difference in mentality is down to him striving for the job vs him having it and having the fear of losing it.

Can't help but agree with that.

He had nothing to lose until he got the job on a full-time basis.

Let’s wait and see then is it….like I said …I’m never wrong…honestly 👍
Fair enough, at the end of the day we both want the next guy to do a brilliant job. I'm also looking forward to you posting positive things in support of the new manager... ;)

Valid perspective and could be true

But he would have gone into preseason with nothing but optimism but even preseason was a disaster
Will definitely be an interesting week to see who they bring in
Considering the timing I would assume that they have already begun preparations to hopefully get their new man in before the international break is over

No intention of assassinating Sheehans football competence his record this season speaks for itself and I think everyone knows by now my thoughts on his appointment.

Some of the contributions to this thread though are crazy,am I happy somebody asked, how can any true fan be happy when they look at the demise of the club on the field.

Three managers in around eighteen months is absolutely shocking but I guess that’s where we are right now. This was unquestionably the right call, how the hell could we possibly give Alan until Xmas to get things right, could you imagine the toxic atmosphere at the Wrexham game if we were still in trouble especially if the rumoured attendance of some high profile backers was true…was never going to happen.

Who comes next I have no idea, but let’s hope it’s someone who can mould what I believe to be a talented squad into a side with an identity and an adventurous approach, no place for negativity this time around.

One last dig at some on here, I don’t doubt there will be contributors who are waiting to be able to point and say…see it is the players not Sheehan that was at fault, let’s hope we get the next appointment right and shut them up.
Good post. Completely agree with your sentiments. I’ve always been frustrated by this type of supporter. They are of course entitled to their viewpoint but the way they have this weird sense of superiority when they are so often wrong is quite bizarre.

As you say I sincerely hope we get it right but you’re quite correct they’ll be itching for the opportunity to say it the players.

I'm yet to be convinced this was the right decision - only time will tell on that - but one thing that is encouraging is the timing. The club using the last international break of the year to do it gets us on the front foot in terms of having a new man in place by the time of the next game. They have been decisive in that sense.

Under the previous regime, it would probably have been a case of dilly dally for a few more weeks, and end up sacking him anyway as we go into the most congested period of the season, making it that bit harder for the new bloke. We have likely avoided that now.

We'll have a bit of a bounce first where the opposite will be true and everyone can say it was clearly Sheehan to blame and not the players.

Although I suspect that will be reversed in 6 months time.

The fact is we are probably an average championship team with average championship players.

Realistically how many of our squad would get a move to a premier League club?

Shame to see it not work out.

Seems a very decent man and some comments in twitter are indicative of us having some really scummy fans.

Anyway, next.

Seems to me it could go one of two ways:

- appoint a head coach in the usual way
- bring someone in who’s a ‘big name’ with a percentage ownership of the club as part of the deal…

Bristol City v Swansea City
