How many truly premier league players are there in the championship at any given time? 10-20? Outside of that you have players who could possible do a job as a backup here and there but not many who could go and start consistently.

You don't need to have a squad of premier league players to not be the worst attack in the league. Just look at the current top 6 for example.

I don't disagree... But there are plenty of players in the championship who would be able to have an active place in a premier League squad.

My point is that we possibly have two and even that may be somewhat of a stretch.

We may very well have a better squad than our league position suggests but how much better? 14th? 12th? 10th?

Can we afford not to?

I’ll repeat.

It’s FAR more costly to overhaul your squad every year, pay compensation. Then you have the opportunity costs of missed gate receipts, television revenue etc.

We have to stop viewing an appointment as a high cost. We should look at it through a ROI.
Of all the decisions the owners/board make, the manager appointment is by far the most important. So I’m with you on that. They should splash the cash if they’re convinced someone is right for us. Unfortunately, I have no confidence they’ll make a good decision.

Nobody really knows the level of these players in my opinion, we’re still seeing some get used to the league. Not to mention the side feels like it’s changed from game to game quite a bit.

I’ve seen Charlton fans, Preston fans and one or two Birmingham fans say that we were the best team they’ve seen at their respective ground this season, that’s despite our poor attack.

To me, that means that we do have some quality in this squad. We may not have any Premier League quality players but they are certainly decent for this level in my eyes.

😯 is all

though could add this 😂

And yes I know it's all about opinions

It’s only a few weeks ago we were sitting mid-table with one of the better defensive records in the league. I thought the foundations were there which we could build on with a couple of better forwards/wingers in Jan.

It’s not been like the capitulation under Williams. OK Saturday was, but that was against probably the most expensively assembled Championship team ever. We were doing worse under Williams against teams like Portsmouth.

We’ll see. Ultimately I believe the problems stem from the ownership and our recent change wasn’t much of a change. The money’s getting silly in this league and we can’t compete financially, so we have to be really good in our managerial appointments and recruitment. Neither seems to be happening.

Maybe they still believe the play offs are within reach, so they've decided to act swiftly instead of waiting until Christmas where it wouldn't be attainable
Cooper managed to do it with Forest PJ, so sounds like a good shout 👌

The playoffs are still in reach in the same way that Susanna Hoffs has always been in reach for me.

I think we may have gone too early on this. We weren’t far off bar a few poor results lately. It was just that final third that was the problem until Sheehan had a brain fart with playing 3 CBs. I’d be surprised if anyone else can get this squad firing in goals, but we’ll see. And I’m also surprised at how quickly it unraveled.
Respect your opinion Leon 👌, but I for 1 disagree sorry 😞

We’re certainly play off possibles if only we had one or two better players across the line behind the striker. Chuck Sinclair in this team and we’re not having this conversation. All of our attack is down the wings and Eom and Ronald just aren’t good enough. And when it goes through the middle, Cullen isn’t good enough either. They rarely affect games.

I thought the foundation through the rest of the team was there, but what do I know. We need another RB and we’ve got loanee kids providing cover at CB and LB, so a bit light. We miss Grimes. Stamenic is ok, but not at the same level. Galbraith is class. Franco’s a good pain in the arse to have, but lacks quality in possession.

We’re average to reasonably good except for lacking power and precision immediately behind the striker (both of which are fine even if we over-paid for Idah).

That’s my take anyway. It feels like we’ve thrown in the towel here when we only needed incremental changes. Hopefully I’m wrong and we’ll get someone in who takes on a 2+ points a game run for the rest of the season.

That’s fine. I’m the last person anyone wants to listen to 🤣

I’m struggling to get over the speed at which it unravelled. I honestly thought we’d turned a corner and would be ok if we could improve the attack. I think that’s down to the players, but hopefully I’m wrong and someone else can get 15 goals a season out of Eom, Ronald and Cullen.

I'm yet to be convinced this was the right decision - only time will tell on that - but one thing that is encouraging is the timing. The club using the last international break of the year to do it gets us on the front foot in terms of having a new man in place by the time of the next game. They have been decisive in that sense.

Under the previous regime, it would probably have been a case of dilly dally for a few more weeks, and end up sacking him anyway as we go into the most congested period of the season, making it that bit harder for the new bloke. We have likely avoided that now.
Agreed, only issue as flagged on the 2nd tier podcast this afternoon is that we’re 4th (3rd at a push) in line when looking for a new manager in the Championship.

I hope we have got someone lined up very quickly and not left waiting and competing with Boro, Southampton & Norwich.

Bloody hell, nobody is suggesting we have premier league quality players in the squad, you don’t need them to be competitive in the Championship…honestly!!!
I think Sunderland bear this out. The gap is so big these days that you pretty much need a new XI if you want to stay up in the PL after promotion even if you have a very good Championship side.

How many players would play regularly in the PL is a pretty redundant question when considering if you’re a top 8/mid table Championship side.

There are two things that make we think we have.

Firstly, I don’t believe we were going to sack Sheehan on Sunday / yesterday. The local journalists had obviously been fed that info. All of them said the same.

Today we have. That makes me think something has changed. And what may have changed is the availability / acceptance of someone else.

Secondly, we haven’t mentioned an interim and interestingly, I don’t think we’ve mentioned any one else going. That also makes me think we may have someone lined up. That’s not to say others won’t go but it’s odd it hasn’t been mentioned unless I’ve missed it? Definitely haven’t mentioned an interim manager.
