Summer Transfer Window

That list proves that many stats are pointless. Neither Dan James or Manor Solomon feature on that list and they were arguably the best two wide players in the Championship last season.

Bottom line is a huge % of crosses come to nothing, so having the most crosses translates to very little (especially if the majority of them are high wide and handsome).
No. It means that stats require context. One stat won't provide a thorough udnestanding of a player. As far as I can tell, no one here has suggested one stat about crossing paints the full picture.

Dan James and Solomon feature in the upper quartile of a large number of metrics, which is unsurprising. Their games are not crossing focused.

I agree re. Crossing more broadly being a pretty poor method for goal creation given the poor ratios.

Indeed Dan James being low on the crossing metric is because a cross is classified as a ball played from outside the box into the box, Dan James's main game is getting behind defenders and into the box before a cut back or ball across the six yard line for a tap in. Ironically that kind of play is not classified as a cross in the data metrics

Feel free to correct me if my memory is playing tricks on me, but I don't remember Dyer or Sinclair being prolific crossers of the ball when playing on the wings for us. Edit: Baka has just described what I mean about Dyer and Sinclair when he's talking about James in the post above.

One thing that the stats on crossing success etc can't account for is the game situation when those crosses are being made. It's one thing for a cross to be put in on a quick counter-attack, when it could be 2 vs 2 in the penalty area and meaning there's far more chance of a successful outcome, as opposed to pumping the ball into the box which is full of defenders after extremely slow build-up play. If a team is delivering too much of the latter then success rates are bound to be minimal.

Indeed neither were big crossers of the ball from out wide, their game was usually one twos to get in behind and cut backs to the penalty area (or in the case of Sinclair just scoring himself)

Far too much emphasis on crossing. Who are we crossing to? We don’t have Peter Crouch and Keiffer Moore up front.
Dead balls are a different matter when our defenders are looking to get on the scoresheet and we’ve got someone to aim at.

The signing of Sinclair was a masterstroke and without him we would not have been promoted.
Without a doubt, he was a genuine contender for Championship player of the year that season and without a doubt would have been part of the team of the year (which I don't think they did back in 2011)

Ian Harte certainly didn't look like he belonged in the team of the season after the playoff final. I remember our fans predicting online that Dyer and Sinclair would have their ageing fullbacks on toast and the Reading fans laughing at the idea...

Also funny to see that in addition to our 2 players in the list, 3 more of them would later play for the Swans.

Some names I’d forgotten about there

Not too many Grant Holt type strikers around these days - shows how much the game has changed over the past 15 years.

Never thought the LOB one was on so no disappointment there
OK for loan but too much investment in wages for one player
Heigh ho on we go

That midfield is a who's who of modern-day Championship icons. Would argue three of the four are proper club legends/fan favourites, and Andy King is probably a cult hero at Leicester

Didn't Taarabt leave QPR with a bad fallout between him and the club?
