Summer Transfer Window

Who had heard of Ben Davies until Neil Taylor got crocked?
Yes, fully understandable and an absolute gem but that's 1 left back in how many years from the youth/academy.

Who is worth an opportunity from the current crop?
In response to another post above, Dabrowski won't be the answer for this coming season.

I have no idea how good he is but Parker seems to get mentioned a lot.

Jigsaw puzzle pieces comes to mind for me. I am no fan of 2 good players for every position. For me thats for the big money clubs in the Premiere.

Us, we get an injury then move the puzzle pieces around for 2,3 5 or 6 games

Key gets injured. Parker or Galbraith takes over.
Tymon gets injured. Key takes over.

Key played LB his 1st 5 games for us.
Galbraith spent almost the entire 2nd half of last season at RB.

So from a budget point of view I am OK with what we have. Would I like to see another utility defender come in. Sure. But for me it comes down to....Do we want to hand out another contract at 1/2m per year or can that money be better spent elsewhere in the squad and give an opportunity to our academy players to step up
We might need to take a gamble on a younger player from a lower league or more affordable from a foreign country.
Could even take a loan for a younger player.

Personally I wouldn't want to rely on Key as Tymon's back up, his defending is atrocious. Yes he was better when Williams left and stopped the stupid inverting, but he was still way below the level required for a top half Championship team (assuming that's our ambition).

If Galbraith is half decent at RB he will supplant Key.

Yeah, but even loans cost money even if only a 1 year loan. Loan fee + part or all of players wages. So your getting close to being back in the same place as signing someone.

lower/foreign league or younger player gets in the way of a Parker etc

Galbraith will almost certainly be primarily utilised in midfield and be 3rd choice cover for Key after Sam Parker

Galbraith has been brought in to play midfield.

Why would Key be a Tymon back up? They play off a different foot. Just asking.

Key's defending is atrocious? Have you seen Tymon when he is in his own half?
Also with regards to the likes of Lissah Dabrowski and the 2 Parkers (amongst others) Seb turns 20 at the start of the season - and that raises a genuine question - at what age do we want our youngsters joining the first team squad? I feel like that is around the age - maybe 21 at a push - where you need to shit or get off the pan.
FFS until recently people were treating Cooper and Cullen like they were youngsters.
For context Cabango made his debut at 19 and got his first international cap at Seb's age.

First 5 games he played for us were left back. Naughton's right footed. Tatey was right footed. Ideally we would like a left footed LB but hard to find. I mean Guardiola is raving about Ait-Nouri watching him play at the club world cup and he is right footed
Key and Tymon play for a mid table Championship side not a a team plying thier trade at the top table. See where I'm coming from with this?

Yes no doubt he has.

What happens if Franco, Widdel & EOM make up the central 3 or Congeve/Coterill make the step up, maybe we sign the Forest midfielder (or Fulton plays week in week out !!) and Galbraith does not nail down a midfield berth?

Would you put Galbraith on the bench if he's a better option @ RB?

We won't be using any youth/academy player to cover Tymon this coming season.
Sam Parker won't even be covering Key if he gets injured or suspended, Galbraith will be the cover for Key but will primarily be used as a central midfielder unless required at RB.

Its all well and good saying we should use our academy but what is the alternative if the players are not up to scratch?

People were yelling for Kyrell Wilson at a stage last season, he went out to Yeovil in the conference and didn't set the world alight. It's a huge step up from youth/U21 to senior football

Yes, fully understandable and an absolute gem but that's 1 left back in how many years from the youth/academy.

Missing the point. Nobody would have claimed that he could have stepped in and done as well as he did.

One of the major reasons why so few have stepped up from the reserves is our reluctance in giving them serious opportunities to do so. Prospects are stuck playing u21 football until they're 21/22. That's far too late.

Realistically players should be out on loan at 17/18, or in our matchday squads if they're deemed to have enough potential. We drag things out too much.

Can't argue about Tymon's defending but he does offer plenty going forward and I thought he was much improved in his defending under Sheehan (can't say the same for Key).

I also agree that Youth players need to be ready for first team football by the age of 21 (and involved fairly regulary before then) otherwise it's highly likely they won't be Championship standard during their careers (there will be some exceptations of course).
