Absolutely required in football. So often you see an attack broken up because someone takes a player out who is leading a breakaway but know that the worst punishment they will get is a yellow card. Doesn't matter if it was a 4v1 if they got past him because he wasn't the last man it couldn't be ruled a "clear goalscoring opportunity"
Dissent to referees also needs addressing, not so much at the highest level as premier league refs are very well paid to get an earful for an hour and half. But because that behaviour filters down through to grass roots football and is emulated by kids who watch their idols week in week out and believe that it is acceptable to verbally abuse volunteer refs who often get paid nothing at all.
The bastards are like little Hitlers now fuk knows what they'll be like with yet more powerTotally against it, they are killing the game. Bad enough with var.
"In the trials, blue cards will give referees the power to send players off for 10 minutes for dissent or cynical fouls."Not sure, not because all the backchat, dissent and other stuff doesn’t need a clear sanction, but because of effectiveness. It works in rugby because the average outcome is 7 points against. One player makes a big difference. In football, it is pretty easy to defend 10 minutes, plus time waste and piss about. I’d rather, as Pego says use current sanctions more liberally until they get the message, or make the sin bin 30 minutes or the balance of the second half if shorter.
The other risk with this is that refs wimp out of deserved reds (where there is no var). I assume the blue also counts as a yellow? In which case make every yellow a 15 minute sin bin automatically, as in rugby, you don’t need another complication. Then teams would be a lot more careful as multiple yellows would hurt.
Definitely required. Get rid of the ‘professional foul’. Although, last night one was committed in the Nigeria v RSA game a few minutes before the end of the game, which might be worth considering if it prevents a goal
100 % this, amend the rules and utilise existing card system. Not a fan of this blue card idea, and while they are at it get rid of VAR its bollox.I've always thought those cynical fouls where a breakaway is ended with a deliberate trip or shove should be a red, they're often way too consequential to be classed as a yellow.
If you want to 'take one for the team', you better be prepared to head down the tunnel afterwards. Either that or get more creative with the cost - If it's a clear cynical attempt to stop a counter, make it a yellow and a penalty (even though it's outside the box), or otherwise make the punishment harsher without having to bring in new card colours or 'sin bins'. If giving a pen is too much, give the attacking team a direct free-kick on the edge of the box or something. Those quick counter attacks are often the most exciting parts of a game, so I'm all for revising rules to protect them.
This is a separate issue to tackle, but options could include Blue Cards not being used in the final 10 minutes and instead upgraded to a red (which means the player being suspended for at least one game, more depending on repeat offenses / disciplinary records)Once you get into the last 10 mins of the game then it's just a free for all
A blue card 1 minute from the end means bugger all
