Population largely congregated in urban areas. Five cities contain about 65% of the population, and most of the rest live nearby.
International transit seems to have been the biggest factor. The biggest "flow" of infected seems to have headed West rather than East, which probably helped keep the numbers down in the Pacific.
From Wuhan into Italy and then out into Western Europe via the ski resorts mostly. Heathrow being in the top two busiest International airports for decades now didn't help the UK at all, and would probably have played a big role in driving the pandemic Worldwide given how lax we were in getting restrictions in place there.
The OU analysis of government responses puts us alongside many other European countries in terms of our response. Milan, Paris, Brussels, Madrid, New York and London were all in line during the first wave.
