Aye, I would think he falls foul of the same rule that stopped Schwarzenegger running for President?Unless Uncle Don can change the rules, Musk will have to be content with being given senior positions to enrich himself.
The perfect excuse to bring back Joris Bohnson. We absolutely should be wary, it’s incredibly naive to think this couldn’t happen here because it already is. Trump and those who control him identified an established political apparatus and voter base, infiltrated it, took it over and basically made it unrecognisable from what it once was. This Republican Party bears no resemblance to that of even Reagan.
I was convinced that Johnson’s 2019 majority of 80 would take two elections for Labour to overturn but they did it in one. But (the Tories’ staggering incompetence and corruption aside) that was in large part made possible by the rise of Reform and the splitting of the right wing vote. There are still those who deny the Tories’ track to the populist right in the wake of the rise of Reform, possibly because they’ve gone that way themselves and they’re either embarrassed to admit it or simply don’t recognise it. I’ve even seen it said that the last set of Tory governments were “centre left” which is frankly the most idiotic and batshit mental thing I think I’ve ever seen written on politics. They’ve now elected a full on populist culture warrior as their leader and eschewed the few more centrist candidates as soon as they could.
The modern Tory Party is absolutely ripe for a merger/takeover by Farage or some other charismatic populist who ultimately offers nothing but empty and unworkable rhetoric but the bulk of their voter base will lap it up. Reform will never win power here as Reform but they absolutely could, and probably will at some point, as a version of what was once the Conservative Party.
So there’s no point pointing and laughing at the USA and putting our fingers in our ears saying it couldn't happen here. It could and probably will and we’re already a significant part of the way along that road. Look at the popular support, and justification the recent riots got from the apologists. The question the sensible majority in this country should be asking ourselves is what can we do to stop it.
Apologies for the ramble.
And the liberals and centrists aren't reading it. They seem to think we are playing by the old rules. Saying 'the economy is getting better' when a majority of voters lives feel like shit and no hope of it getting better is going to lead to voting for any orange turd that promises to burn it all down. The media-space in the western world is predominantly controlled by rightwing asshats who butter up useful idiot politicians and gaslight the general population.
The writing is on the wall.
Sorry TLDR messageAnd the liberals and centrists aren't reading it. They seem to think we are playing by the old rules. Dems looking for 'reasons'...'ooh, Kammy should have gone on Rogan ffs'. As I see it, there is a simple explanation that no tinkering at the edges was going to sort out. They were done when they promised more of the same, plus then chose a woman, and a non-white one - to front that message (they had no choice as Biden should never have stood). She had no chance. It was always in the post, especially with all the Muskshit, Bots, Vote rigging by disenfranchisement and all.
The USA is deeply racist and/or misogynistic to its core and wanted recognition that things weren't ok. It got what it wanted from a lying scum narcissist that will now never pay for his crimes and will commit many more. That also might be the least rigged election we'll see in the US in our lifetimes.
For my money, to win the next election in this country, labour would need to offer something more radical unless people do feel 'richer', which is bloody unlikely now. Some Corbynism without a total idiot fronting it maybe. That is, still run on 'change'.
Think that’s nonsense. He’s very popular. MAGA is very popular. His voting block was across the board. This cycle of elections world wide has proved very difficult for all incumbent parties. They’ve basically all had a kicking following Covid, the energy crisis following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and rampant inflation.
No matter that Trump wouldn’t have been able to deal with those things either. It’s just fortunate to be opposing the parties that ruled through that lot.
I heard an American commentator on Radio 4 this morning say that, normally, given the circumstances, the Republicans would have won by one of the biggest landslides in history. The only reason they didn’t is Trump’s divisiveness.
Corbynism? Are you being serious? And the liberals and centrists aren't reading it. They seem to think we are playing by the old rules. Boom. Slam-dunked $$$A slam-dunk, big time.
Money markets priced this in beautifully over the past few weeks and days.
Watch the leading Asia markets unfold (overnight).
It's been like taking candy from a baby.
So sweet and simple at being on the Right side of such seismic moves.
Corbynism? Are you being serious?
Roundly rejected. The public do not want that leftist claptrap.
Keir is labours best bet by a long way. Go left and the tories are back in the game.
He was pretty much crushed in 2020. I think JB is right. Post Covid/Putin inflation (‘gas’ and food prices came up a lot) plus the usual racism and misogyny of US men drove this result. Mostly cost of living though. They want to tear it all down…like we saw with Brexshit, protest vote against ‘the establishment’.Think that’s nonsense. He’s very popular. MAGA is very popular. His voting block was across the board.
This is a good post, but in all fairness to Labour, they will not improve things to the level they need in 5 years.. unless they really want to tax billionaires.. the illegal immigration problem isn't going away either, Labour can win voters if this issue is sorted outEg…ish…
I’m saying come 5 years time they may need to present themselves on a radical platform of change if people can’t feel the benefit of anything at granular level in their living standards. The fash far right platform will be taken by the Tories by then, and the centrist more of the same only works if the benefits can be felt it voters standard of living. That was shown pretty starkly on Wednesday. The US economy is in good shape. 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. There is no deep love for Starmer’s Labour. They have just been given a chance on a change agenda. If it doesn’t visibly work, the electorate will be looking for more change. Some of the 2017 policies were very popular. By 2019 it was all about Brexit claptrap and Corbyn was vilified. It’s not about Starmer or Corbyn (who was and is an idiot).
