The 'Vitor Matos' Managerial Thread?

Surprised we haven't heard the name Carlos Carvalhal. I think he would certainly be someone who could settle the ship.

Whether people like it or not the truth is that our number one candidate who the owners likely had in mind before the sacking of Sheehan was gazumped by a bigger side with better budget and a strong playing squad with a very strong position to continue to challenge for promotion.

While some might argue that our alleged package for relocating his family was way behind theirs, the rumoured salary that they were offering was triple ours and right up until the weekend there wasn't even a rumour of a rumour that Boro were sniffing around Hellberg.

The club have had to draw upon their fallback plans, likely Matos wasn't close to being the number one pick. Then again if I recall neither was Rodgers, he was something like our fourth or fifth choice manager to replace Sousa. Not saying that he will put together a masterful run to see us blitzing into the play off picture, but sometimes your first, second or third choice was never actually the right one.

I’d also argue that Boro don’t have that much of a better playing squad than us. Apart from Hackney and maybe Azaz, they don’t have wildly better players. I saw an estimated team for them under Hellberg and thought it wasn’t anything that special for this league.

The money and league position is what will have done us over.

If you're creative enough - and possibly high - you can draw a line from Modric to Matos.

From what I gather on the FAW site, Matos was in the same FAW Pro License cohort as Davide Ancelotti. Maybe, mmaayybeeeee.........there is a whiff of a Modric link there. This info goes back to when Matos was at Liverpool and Davide Ancelotti was working at Real with Daddio and Modric. Could it be possible that Modric was asked to put the feelers out for recommendations on top young head coach prospects and Davide Ancelotti suggested his buddy Matos? or at least vouched for him in some way as there is a - admittedly tenuous - connection there?

Agreed I said this on another thread. This appointment has to be based on the recommendation from an agent or someone inside of football.

He wasnt on our shortlist last time and it can't be data based because he's only managed 12 games in a very poor league.

We had already spoken with Hellberg before sacking Sheehan and were confident of getting him.

People thinking we should have 4 or 5 options as a backup of the same quality are deluded.

For all we know Matos may be 5th choice and we’ve been knocked back by all other options.

If this guy is appointed ( I don’t believe he will by the way ) there won’t be a single person who is not hugely disappointed…..if they’re honest that is, expect the usual suspects to try and make a silk purse out of a sows ear, they can’t help themselves it’s in their DNA.

Also think managerial appointments are increasingly becoming a completely random grab-bag in terms of success. Manning at Norwich was a great appointment at the time, and we'd have 100% taken him here, yet he's led them to the worst start in the club's history. Still should have done much better at Southampton - even higher up, there was no reason for Potter to be so bad at West Ham, Andrews is doing much better at Brentford than anyone expects.

So much of the success (or lack thereof) for a manager at a club is unquantifiable 'vibes' that you really can't judge anymore*

It will certainly be underwhelming but he needs to be given a chance. We could bring in a big name and he could easily fail or succeed as could someone like Matos.

There are a lot of things that need to align from style of play to creating a bond with the players.

It's a big gamble, let's see which way it goes.....we need to atleast whoever gets the job our support.

Sometimes a manager is suited to certain clubs, I think Manning falls into that category and highlighted by Rodgers when he came to us.

I still feel that Manning has something to offer, a club with no big expectations is perfect for him.

How many reputable sources are reporting Matos? Genuinely wondering because from what I gather only FLW and one place in Portugal has reported it? BBC listed him as one of the candidates were speaking to.

Sometimes a manager is suited to certain clubs, I think Manning falls into that category and highlighted by Rodgers when he came to us.

I still feel that Manning has something to offer, a club with no big expectations is perfect for him.
The Norwich job was too big especially with expectations from fans that they are without question a top 10 club at the very least.

Manning done great with MK Dons, Oxford and Bristol and has a ton of experience with younger sides developments, just don’t know at this time if his passion has probably taken a dent with the performance at Norwich I guess he’d want abit of time out.

This is all very true , you just cannot possibly predict if a manager is going to be good. There’s a bit of luck involved so fingers crossed it works out. I prefer matos to more “experienced” dinosaurs and journeymen.
