There is no money. We're in a mess.

Well it's not, we don't have wingers so he plays a system with no wingers. We do have centre backs though so we play 3 of them. Our only fit creative player is Piroe so we play him in a deeper position than playing him up top instead of going with 2 out and out up front. So the formation is entirely logical for what we have. Tweaking it slightly will do nothing, we'd still be too narrow, slow and stuffy.

The stupidity was letting the squad get into the position with so few options meaning we can't play anything else and that's an all round shortcoming at the club - owners, recruitment, Martin.

I can buy that the tactics are a problem though. This formation without the constant obsession with meaningless passes and more movement, being mote direct, having more freedom could be a lot better.

There’s more than one way to play without wingers.

Not without employing a very similar formation to what we already have been and not producing more gaping holes elsewhere

People saying we havent got the players for 4-2-3-1

Obafemi
Patterson - Piroe - Sorinola
Grimes - Allen
Manning - Darling - Cabango - Naughton
Fisher

Ntcham can play cm, cam and lw
Obafemi can play rw
Piroe can play rw or st

The problem is, I think we still are. They're just at the end of their credit line.

Bang on about the squad though.

I worded it badly. I meant extending the amount by which we were living beyond our means.

The number of people that seem to think we have no debt etc is astonishing.

Martin has been given a lot of money. More than he should have. And we have players on tens of thousands a week between them bombed out. And the assets we wanted to realise, we made it so obvious that it was always going to end up with an undercooked offer close to the deadline and the players themselves not giving a toss hence reducing their fee with their abject performances.

They never seem to learn.

The problem we have is Martin. I honestly think we can put a very competitive team together (more so than we could have done a season or so ago as Ayew was draining everything away). We play a stupid formation and style for the players we have or can possibly get.

I'm probably of a lower opinion of the quality of our squad than you are. I think our starting XI is competitive but very little below that. Couple of injuries and we'd really be in it.

Not helped by making certain players persona non grata of course.

I agree with this. We have very very little depth outside the first eleven. Our starting strikers are good enough as they proved last year, Grimes isn't everyone's cup of tea, but him and Joe are a perfectly adequate Championship central midfield. We've got a ton of centre halves to choose from, don't think any of them are outstanding, but they're mostly good enough. Same with Fisher really, he hasn't set the world alight, but he's servicable enough. Our big problem for the starting XI is the wing backs, who are just nowhere near good enough for what Martin wants them to do, and we have so little depth we have to continue to rely on Jay Fulton and Liam Cullen. Doesn't help that players like Whittaker and Garrick are sent out on loan, and Ogbeta seemingly not in the picture at all.

Can Patterson be relied upon? Can Sorinola? Are we then expecting Naughton to bomb down the right wing?

Looks better. I‘d stick Congreve instead of Sorinola and play Piroe up front with Obafemi. Mix it up as you say in last paragraph.

Piroe down the middle. Congreve one side. Obafemi the other side (someone with a bit of pace). Pato in the hole. Grimes and Allen in the middle and the back 4 as stated.

Fin.

That's a bottom 6 first 11.

Depressing how far we've fallen. We're really relying on a 56 year old Joe Allen to command a midfield as well.

The fact you label Allen as 56 just shows that you’re trolling. As for your statement that this XI is a bottom six team, you should give your head a wobble.
