Pace and creativity.

Early days I know, but do we have them in our new squad ?

I'm more hopeful to tighten up the defence with the newbies due.

And even though systems can be changed, pace with skill is a beautiful and exciting thing to see on a football pitch.

I loved their No. 7 today btw. Think it was no.7. The small fella with Modric hairstyle

Agree. A classic creative attacking midfielder is what’s missing. Get Patino further forward.

He's got no pace and wants to be dropping in to receive the ball. Looks to be a quality player but he's no different from Grimes, Fulton and Allen. Martin made the same mistake of trying to load up our team with too many of the same type of player and expecting miracles.

Not sure how quick Ntham was but for me he was the creative. Walsh, Cooper and Cullen for me are good enough to make a difference. Haven't seen enough yet of the newbies.

Given time I can see Duff making us hard to beat. Which is important.

The lack of pace and creativity stands out like a sore thumb..........along with a flat back 4.

These are things that I would imagine even someone with the most basic knowledge of football can see.

yes it was the same withn our previous
manager who persisted with 5 at the back despite it failing though it does now seem after 4 seasons he has learnt Nd is starting with a flat back 4.

Patino is a decent player, likes to come short for the ball and play deeper by the looks, he won't be a player who will carry the ball or make long bursting runs to support the forwards.
I don't see him as a creative forward player, I see a similar player to Grimes and for me I think we might have wasted a loan with him.

Oh what I would give for a David Penney type midfielder in that team yesterday.

Back 4 is the way forward.
A back against a team with 3 centre halves and wing backs that most seem to play just works for me. Gives more fluidity and the formation offers more protection and a rigid solid base of 4 at the back that allows full backs to get forward if you play 2 holding midfielders capable to cover.

What's missing for me?

A board that know how to run a successful football club.

For the fourth time in a row, they've picked a new coach who is a reaction to the last coach, instead of trying to establish some continuity and consistency in their selections.

I do feel for Duff. About half of this dressing room will never be a good fit for the style he wants to play, especially in midfield. I bet at least part of him is gutted Grimes has signed a new deal because if he'd been sold, I don't think Duff would have gone and bought another Grimes-type player. He'd have got someone in more to his taste.

It's going to be a long old season I think, and for that you can thank the Yanks once again. Clueless as ever.

We've broadly missed pace and creativity for about five years now mind...

Completely agree, pace (especially at RWB/LWB) is lacking. Hope Ginelly can bring some of this going forward and stay fit.

That being said, also not too disappointed with the start of the season, new look squad with a different style of football and still getting points in two games (should have been 3) against some teams who will be in and around there at the end of the season. This division is all about consistency as we have seen time and time again, just don't lose

Formations don't help.
It's a strange one with Duff for me, he wants to get forward quicker but yet the further forward in our formation the more narrower we are.........wingers offer an outlet and a direct ball that allows you to get the ball forward quickly and in turn brings more pace even if the wingers are not the quickest.

Like the old Burrows team, solid as a base with full backs offering something in attack with a solid midfield 3, outlets on the wing and a focal point up top.
Sometimes a shape change can bring what is needed and it's clear to see.

Its all about opinions and we are all entitled to one but where do you think we would be without thus current board?
Thus has been debated long abd hard but this biard has kept the club afloat since relegation they have made mistakes along the way were critiscised for lack of spend in January yet have dug deep this window.
They are businessmen first unlike prevoiys ownership ( Silver Shield/ninth floor aside)
They will have a different view ti us fans and the previous reigme who sold out.
So much is talked of about identity etc but for the owners they wantbus back in thr PL as thats where the monies are and there they have a chance to flip us.
Im not sure we have deliberately sourced managers who were a reaction to the one before especially as Martin was what third or fourth choice?
We may have picked Duff because he is results focused and has a pedigree for promotion and play off finals....
Im not as fixed on identity as others and dont get it as i have lifed theough lots of mamangers and they all played a different way

A Darren pratley type midfielder we are missing, box to box player who weighed in with his share of goals, and actually ran at defences.

Quick ball playing centre half's cost money, quick, mobile midfielders also cost money, money that perhaps we don't have, it is what it is ...
