Desperate tragedy in Caerphilly that yet another young person's life is snuffed out by an out of control dog on Monday afternoon.

Obviously the main culprit is the arsehole owner that must bear the main responsibility, and has been arrested as I understand it.

... but why are the police so reluctant to tell us what breed of dog it was? If it was a mongrel, tell us it was a mongrel. If it was an illegal pitbull tell us it was a pitbull.

Latest BBC update says Chief Super Mark Hobrough states the "work to identify the breed of dog involved is also progressing". If it takes 2 days for our modern Plod to identify a dog breed it goes to show Mr Hobrough is no Inspector Morse.

I’ve wondered the same thing.

At least part of the police’s reluctance to name the breed prematurely is because the Dangerous Dogs Act is so shit. It names (from what I remember) about four or five breeds that it’s illegal to own in the UK. The problem with that is that it’s often difficult to impossible to tell quickly whether a dog is one or the relevant breeds. Especially so when it comes to pit bull type dogs. They have to be sure before they can say because if it’s not one of those breeds they can’t go around saying it is. It is of course an offence to have a dangerously out of control dog regardless of breed. I think.

Lots of different types of pit bull though.

Pretty certain it’s the one detailed below:

The Pocket Bully is a mix between the American Pitbull Terrier and the smaller Patterdale Terrier.

Tragic case. Very difficult to get head around it.
I had radio Wales on in car on way home from work and the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 needs "root and branch" reform according to a legal expert they have on.

I bet the owner used to say it was like a baby and great around kids.

They usually do.

Apparently only had the dog 15 days, was sold by previous owner due to them not being able to control.

That was from a daily mail article posted on social media though so could be b*llocks.

Why do people have these types of dog ?

Someone I knew had a Japanese Akita, I wouldn't go anyway near him when I saw him walking it.
"No, they're great, you just have to treat them properly"
And then one day it turned on him. He was a big bloke as well, good job it wasn't his wife or daughter. Had it put down. Their next dog was a spaniel.

If the police are looking into the breed of the dog, they will need the services of an expert witness who can examine the animal and stand up in Court and say the dog is a ....... To do that they’ll need to examine the dead dog and also potentially examine the dogs that were used to breed this animal. If it’s a cross it may be even more difficult.

There you go...

Caerphilly dog attack: Former owner spoke to police after selling animal

People that own these types of dogs have only one agenda, to make themselves look "hard", Assholes.

I just began an online quote for pet insurance. One of the five types of dog they won't insure is "wolf/wolflike". WTF?

Many Tears had a wolf hybrid up for adoption a few months back. Suitability criteria was quite stringent as you can imagine

As far as being convicted, it doesn’t really matter in this case what kind of breed it is as it will have been ‘dangerously out of control’ . Dog will almost inevitably be destroyed, what will happen to the owners will depend on the circumstances of the case , whether the kid did anything to rile it, whether there’d been any provocation of the dog, etc, whether there was any history of violence and there’d been a contingency destruction order eg.

That’s where the breed of the dog comes into it, if it is a dangerous or banned dog, they’ll go to prison.

Always hate doing these cases, as a dog lover, they’re horrible either way
