Aye. I very much doubt that we've spent the kind of money we have aiming for a mid table finish.
Do you on a personal level feel that this squad is a given to finish higher than mid table?

The question is also open to others and I feel it's relevant in regards to the title thread.

Well before the season started i think the general thought was in Galbraith , Widell and Yalcouye we had signed 3 excellent midfield players . Inoussa was i think accepted as a decent signing as well. Is the manager getting the best out of these players? or are they taking time to settle. Personally i don't think the manager has a clue what his best team is or where best to play some of the new recruits. I do think we are desperate for a real number 10 to link defence and attack and to play balls through the centre of the pitch for our strikers to run onto. All our attacks are channelled down the wings.

It feels to me a squad where its most natural fit is mid table, however, with a fair wind (and by that I mean good fortune with injuries and suspensions, Sheehan deciding on a clear best XI, and one or two players catching fire) we might be able to trouble the lower play-off positions.

I'd be absolutely fine with a comfy mid-table finish though. It would represent progress from the last 4-5 years. I see this as a building block season to be able to push on next year.

My view on it is similar to this but I do worry that the board might want an instant upgrade on the last few seasons and see a genuine push for the play offs as realistic.
We continually have seen the need for a solid foundation, I see this one as the first real solid layer, previous seasons have seen that foundation crumble.

I just hope the board are understanding of the situation because chucking money in doesn't necessarily mean instant success or even improvement. If they do expect something then they can take the heading of this post on board.

Things are certainly being done right, we don't have much room to manoeuvre and we can't afford costly mistakes.

How long did Coventry take to head the league table? Some need to realise that irrespective of spending cash and bringing in a large percentage of players every season there has to be a period where players need to be bedded down to the system of play and capabilities of players. It only happens overnight in pc games.

A place in the top 10 of the table will be fine - January will be important if we can replicate last January's signing of O'Brien while next summer might not see as many new recruits but the quality of player recruited will hopefully fine tune the squad.

That's if we still have a recruitment team behind the scenes!!!

Depends what people view mid table as. I think top 10 this season and pushing for playoffs next season would be the expectation. This year was always going to be about integrating such a high player turnover for me.
Let's just hope the board have their feet on the ground and are not being unreasonable after their investment in the summer, it's great that they have done it but that sort of money doesn't turn the mess into serious play off contenders in a few months.

Interesting finish to that post, you hearing something or just an assumption?

No not really, but if one looks back at the number of people since relegation from the PL who have been involved in our recruitment and analytics departments within the club I daresay percentage wise there have been in ongoing recruitment and departures almost every 18 months.

But why wouldnt the board have some expectations, last season we finished 11th 7 points off the bottom play off place despite a run of 9 games where we picked up only 4 points.
That run saw the sacking of Williams who many fans were saying he didnt have a clue was mismanaging the squad who many fans were saying was capable of a play offs finish.

With Sheehan steering us to another mid table finish we have hovered betwwen 10th and 15th over the past 4 seasons the board felt they had their man and have invested into the squad so why shouldnt they think with this summers business improving the squad whilst I recognise we havent replaced the experience and quality of Joe Allen and Kyle Naughton we have added some quality and Vip seems to be realising his pitential that there shouldnt be a possibility of mounting a serious challenge for the play offs....or maybe a good cup run.
We finished mid table last season having beeen managed for a fair period by an inept magager rescued by our current manager so why cant they believe by backing that manager with some additiinal quality and numbers a play off challenge is not potentially achievable.

The league is better this year, you can tell by the amount spent elsewhere. Two of the three clubs coming up from League One both have greater spending power than most of the league, that’s never happened before.

Whilst the club has spent money this summer it’s only to play catchup. We had one of the lowest squad values in the league, now we are about 10th or 11th. If it wasn’t for a late flurry of results from both Sheehan and even Russ the season he left, we would be regularly flirting with relegation.

So the progress this season is I don’t think relegation will even enter the conversation at any point, it should be comfortable top 10, and not just achieved from a late run of results. A team with a squad value like ours can’t expect top 6. We can hope for it but not expect it, it’s unreasonable.

We're currently having our best Cup run in six seasons, since reaching the last 16 of the FA Cup and losing to Man City. We haven't got to this stage of the Carabao Cup since 2017 (edit because I got that wrong). So Sheehan has achieved one of your criteria already.

Which maybe what the club are looking at..
