What are we really expecting from Matos....

You seemed to have wound yourself up.
Not even slightly.

There is absolutely nothing about football that in any way winds me up any longer. It used to when I was a lot younger, but these days? Nope. It’s a pleasant diversion from stuff that is important.

Glad to hear it.

We have quite a young team and if Matos has the ability to develop and coach young players, as has been stated, we could be in for a good few years.

Eom, Vipotnik, Widdell, Stamenić and Innoussa are all just 23, Ronald, Galbraith and Idah are just 24. Add some of our youth players who are out on loan and playing well, the future could be bright.

At the moment my cup is half full.
We all hope so.

Of course you can.

The only argument is with extrapolating it for a full season where we play everyone twice.

I thought it was a ridiculously risky appointment. I still do.

If we get promoted with him it won’t change that. It’s like someone gambling everything on red. It’s stupid whether red comes up or not.

I like him so far though. That’s not the same thing.
Surely it's not comparable to gambling everything on red though?

They met with him several times, saw and understood his philosphy, he did his badges with FAW so had due dilligence done there and with several other people in the game including Modric. It's becoming fashionable to not give the club credit for their good decisions and that's a shame.

He took over a clusterf**k unbalanced mess of a squad that had been assembled with no playing style or structure in mind and has knitted together what he has into a side that is evidently superior to the relegation scrappers but unable to match up and overcome those at the upper end of the table.
I expect a season of rising and dipping between 12th-19th and then a proper overhaul in the summer to replace the weak links in the system with some higher quality and professionalism.
If Hull, Preston, Brizzle, Milwall et al are up there then we should be targeting a season like that next year.

I’m not even sure that we need an overhaul in the Summer.
We signed a lot of players last summer and my personal (a lot won’t agree) view is that our squad is stronger and we have trimmed off some dead wood.
Some key signings in-the right positions this summer and if Matos is still improving us then we may be able to have a crack next year.

A right back, 2 decent wingers and a creative 10 and this team would be a different animal.

Agree with you, the weakness in the squad seem to be the areas they havent got round to yet. We need a right winger and we need a right back. The rest I am happy with.

Matos also looks like a masterstroke it’s hard to not give credit, it was a brave choice but they clearly had their reasons. They obviously liked what he had to say and it must have aligned with what they were after. And let's face it the players are definitely responding. So are most of the fans.

Glass a tad more than half full for me ..cheers! 🍺

We’ve played well in some games and have been dreadful in others, deserved something from Stoke and Coventry but could quite easily have lost a few others.

Should have been buried by half time yesterday and WBA had that purple spell against us when they should have scored…as bad as they were.

We’re all delighted that we’ve picked up points to pull away from the relegation spots but that doesn’t mean that we’ve progressed in footballing terms, I’ll be more than happy If we continue to pick up points playing the way we are but like I’ve said in other posts the high octane pressing game is going to take its toll.

I think we’ve done as well as can be expected considering where we were. The football is improving in my eyes, passing is better, distances between players is shorter and no more gaps in midfield. We’re never going to be playing tiki taka because Matos follows Klopp who was never like that anyway. It’s going to take a bit more time to fully gel I think. Plus there’s not a lot we can do about creativity until we buy one or two more players. We definitely need more pace to suit this style, hopefully we can do something about that come the summer.

No.

The outcome of a gamble doesn’t change the gamble in the first place.

We’ve played two games fewer under him than he’d had as manager in total before we appointed him. Which was the only run of games we had to base our ‘data analysis’ on.

It remains a hugely risky appointment for a club that was in our position. We all hope the gamble pays off. It’s far too early to tell yet. But I like him and I’m pleased he’s managed to get some much needed energy into the team. It will take different players before he can do much else.
No more of a risk than when we appointed Garry Monk who had zero managerial/coaching experience when we were in the PL

Appointing any manager/coach us always a risk we appointed Martin who had had 2 seasons experience,Duff with 5 seasons experience how did those work out?

We fail to give the club managment any kudos in the selection process as it is kept being said "there is no football" knowledge....despite our CEO having spent the majority of his career in football clubs admittedly not focused on the playing side but his last role was as CEO too. What football knowledge did David Goldstone ,Malcolm Struel, Doug Sharpe,Huw Jenkins have?

According to the owners Christmas message the recruitment process was detailed....

It is early days but what I have seen so far makes me think we actually might have got it right this time.
Watching the video showing him arriving at the club...meeting the staff at Fairwood how he spoke with them ,how he seems to be in the dressing room and his interviews pre and post match filled me with some confidence .
He has spoken much about building a team and I believe that wasnt just about on the pitch, where he has made an impact in a short frenetic period of games and without his coaching team.

I feel far more confident in Matos than I did in the early days of Martin..( I was crucified on the boards for dissing him very early doors) or Duff and even Sheehans appointment. Still early days and it could go all wrong lets hope not.

I have no expectations of playoffs our games under Sheehan put paid to that....All I ask from Matos is the continuing improvement with us winning more and scoring more.
We are creating chances we had 2 golden ones at Coventry which we failed to convert they could have given us that win against a higher team that is talked about. We created a couple yesterday too resulting in a blicjed shot from Fulton and Ronald shooting when perhaps he could have passed inside.

We are looking a different side to the one we saw just before Sheehans dismissal in terms of workrate...yet Sheehan talked about us needing one yet couldnt get the same players to do what they are now plus we have mire attacking intent.

Matos has come in and done a great job so far and long may it continue.

I wanted it to work with Sheehan, in the end it was hard to defend him keeping his job. The problem with some people is they don't like to admit it when they're wrong.

The gambling on red example was just that, an example of the difference between a gamble made and an outcome. It wasn’t meant to be particularly analogous.

In practice of course, a gamble on red is just short of a 50:50. Appointing a football manager is probably more risky than that in the long term. Whoever you appoint.

We also need a creative midfielder and, to be honest, we need a new centre forward if this is the style Matos is after. Vipotnik, for all he’s had a better season and has scored some spectacular goals, isn’t the right type of player longer term for a high energy pressing game. Idah may be, but haven’t seen much of it as yet.
