I don’t think many casual republican voters realise just how much their party has been infiltrated. It’s not the Republican Party of even Reagan anymore they’ve veered so far to the authoritarian right. We have a similar although less developed phenomenon in the UK. You see previously vaguely sensible right of centre people in complete denial about how far the Tory party has been infiltrated by the hard right, even so far as suggesting that Thatcher was further to the right than the post 2016 Conservatives, which is absolute bobbins. Trump and MAGA used the GOP as a political apparatus and a ready made voter base and they fell for it. It’s too late for the Republican Party now, the UK equivalent still has a chance depending on which way the tories go next now that the UK public has soundly rejected them.

I've seen plenty claim the election was lost due to socialist policies and Starmer is 'hard left'. Genuinely could see someone like John Major in Starmer's cabinet it's that centre-right.

I saw that too. Sunak is a commie Tribal loyalty and social media is a terrible thing.

Lots of ex tories would be happy joining Labour now and so probably it will increasingly resemble the old conservative party of, say, Ted Heath. The Liberals may be all that's left to fill the centre left space if the tories go full Badenoch, or even Farridge.
