I saw Patino come on and score for Arsenal on the box in a cup tie a couple of years ago. He was a very attacking midfielder that night and later said that he styled his play on Carzola and Fabregas.

Unless he’s changed position since he’s not a Grimes replacement.

He’s far more than a Grimes. He’s both an attacking midfielder and a defensive midfielder, completely versatile.

Quick feet, can go past someone, strong in the tackle and a great eye for a pass. He can play any of our midfield roles.

We have to assume that we are not breaking the bank for these deals. If used correctly then there is nothing wrong with plugging holes or enhancing the squad for a period of just one season. Therefore, we can say it makes sense to try and find the correct formula, whether this is successful won’t become clear for some months.

I think the point I’m making is that ‘enhancing* the squad’ from 12th to 10th has absolutely no value whatsoever. If it’s from 22nd to 19th it does, and if it’s from 10th to 6th it does.

We’d be better off coming 14th and giving one of our own loads of experience than coming 8th with a loan.

We will have to see. Let’s hope he can make a step change difference.

He’s tended to sit a bit deeper for most of his career (apparently - this is according to Arsenal mates not me as I haven’t seen him as far as I can recall other than against us last year).

Yes, get the point. However, we don’t know the end result now. If 12th becomes 10th then we have lost very little, but if 12th becomes 6th or higher then it’s thumbs up.

If the coaching team don’t believe that we have anyone ready to step up then the low fee/wage loan deal is the route to take. This is also a much better option than a Liam Walsh type signing.

Agree.

Left footed players will be coming.

Yes, so I believe. The guy from the Netherlands appears a reasonable possibility.

The elephant in the room is Piroe. Unless we can get a new contract signed, we HAVE to get a fee for him.

Liam Walsh is a game changer. A real talent. The problem is that we cannot keep him fit (no one can - not just us). There are, unfortunately, players like that. As there are players that never seem to be injured.

Which begs the question for me, why do certain players seem so prone to injury? In this day and age of anatomical and medical science?

Apart from playing us at the .com where he was rubbish and got rightly sent off.. he's been decent from watching him for Arsenal and Blackpool, likes to dictate from the middle with the ball, but Ampadu looked the same at his age, and it hasn't gone to plan

Liam Walsh doesn’t change many games. He also represents a much bigger gamble than a low fee, young, fit, hungry, versatile Charlie Patino.

My impressions from that highlights video:

Anticipation and reaction is very good, he is always moving and rarely seems to be caught on his heels.
He definitely likes a tackle and likes to engage and take on opposing players.
He doesn't seem to be the creative maestro we are looking for but seems an upgrade on Fulton for that box to box midfield role.
Certainly not a replacement for Ntcham based on those highlights.

There’s a lot of talk from Saints that Grimes is going there alongside Downes.

Some of them seem pretty confident that the deal for Grimes is nailed on. Just to wait for their departures first.

Grimes gave a massive endorsement of Southampton the other day didn’t he, we should be asking for more than he’s worth though.

Borini worked out as we went up.

I don’t see much point in so many loans unless it makes a step change in our final position.

It’s just money out for no return unless they (a) make the difference to us staying up or (b) make the difference in us getting to the playoffs.

Arsenal don’t want him back.

Seems like the sort of press resistant midfielder we have been crying out for. Love Fulton and Grimes but when they get pressured you can guarantee that ball is going back or sideways. All for this loan
